The Vertibird is REAL

<p>So I was at work today, flipping through some Defense briefing
materials, when I came across a very interesting find. It turns
out that everyone's favorite aircraft, the Vertibird, is actually
real. The V-22 Osprey is the world's first production tilt-rotor
aircraft:</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> <img width="125" height="100" border="0" src="http://pma275.navair.navy.mil/images/ga ... 22_010.jpg" /></p><p> </p><p> </p>
<blockquote>
<p><em>The V-22 is being developed to perform United States Marine Corps
(USMC), United States Navy(USN), and United States Special Operations
Command (USSOCOM) combat missions. The V-22 design, incorporating
advanced but mature technology proven in the XV-15 tiltrotor
demonstrators, V-22 Full Scale Development (FSD) models, and V-22
Engineering and Manufacturing Development (EMD) models, takes advantage
of proven technology in composite materials, digital fly-by-wire flight
controls, and advanced survivability and crashworthiness. A tiltrotor
combines the speed, range and fuel efficiency normally associated with
turboprop aircraft with the vertical take-off/landing and hover
capabilities of helicopters. The tiltrotor aircraft represents a major
technological breakthrough in aviation that meets long standing
military needs.</em> </p>

Hahaha dude where have you been? That thing has been around a good long time. Last I heard they were planning on scrapping it because there was some huge crash that I don't remember the details of.
off topic? OMG YOU'VE BEEN CENSORED... yet you're still posting. MYSTARY!!!!

The Osprey is total crap.
Been crashing them since the 80's.
Also a combat problem: take out one engine/rotor and it falls.
(Asymetrical damage intolerance.)
This is pork barrel at its finest.
Corporate welfare.
Much worse than the Stryker.
Why not just make a Dynalifter version of the harrier?
(With crew/cargo area.)

You betchye. The V22 is a giant barely-flying sack of shit.
Commonly rooted-for by sci fi nerds and people with no sense of reality.
Go on google video and look up v22 osprey. I'm certain you'll find some video of it killing some test pilots.
Nevermind. I'm such an awesome guy. I'm doing all the work for you:

I forget who Frank Horrigan is, but if the V22 is an indication as to where things are ending up, the Master is going to be some mongoloid crack baby with a dash of treacher collins thrown in the mix. Geddit? collins mixer? Treacher collins. I'm such a card. For more information and pictures, check out this website. We're just one step closer to Plasma rifles, Frank Horrigan, and the Master.

Listen, I didn't know about it until now. And from what I've read, vast improvements have been made on the Osprey. It's apparently going to be the new naval troop transport of choice. Faster than choppers, capable of achieving longer distance.
And Burnov, how do you forget who Frank Horrigan is?

yeah, the military is always scrapping things. Though, the army is using lazers to knock the smallest artillery round out of the sky, which I find interesting... And of course, it can knock down larger missles & such as well. The SR-71 Blackbird was built in 1950... That means they had working designs even before that... And that aircraft has set the standards for stealth and speed since it's conception... So, think about what they have right now that we won't see for another 50 yrs.
Righteous is the man who never turns a blind eye towards the truth.
Furthermore, the SR-71 wasn't so much stealthy as it was able to fly at ridiculously high altitudes and ridiculously fast, so fast that if it was detected. It wouldn't matter anyhow.
Furthermore, development of technologies such as the SR-71 say nothing about the potential for making an inherently flawed design actually work... well. The V22 has no future, as it stands second to IEDs it seems the U.S army's own whirling deathmachines known as helicopters seem to incur more fatailies of their own kind than anything else.
Their best case scenario would be to have the V22 work at least half as reliably as an actual helicopter, which is a generous estimate. So don't hold your breath for this one.
So really. Yeah. The V22 equals no.
Oh yeah, and KoC. If you had referred to Frank Horrigan as something like: "That giant mutant guy who kills innocent people for no reason". I would have known who you were talking about.

Um, some tests in early 60's for the sr71.Europa13 wrote:yeah, the military is always scrapping things. Definitely not '50.
The SR-71 entered service in the mid 60's, I believe. I don't see how you can, in your mind, draw a line between the Sabre and the SR-71 as being in the same generation of aircraft.
and yeah. Back to Burnov's statement, it wasn't stealthy at all, at least not by how stealth is defined now. It just flew damn fast and damn high. Above radar and missiles of the day. It was thus unreachable, not undetectable. Granted, it had some stealth capability, but peanuts compared to the F-117 or the B-2.

A completely new fabrication technique had to be developed to make the
titanium skin of the sr71.
SR71 had engines that could melt themselves very quickly if they went anywhere near their real max thrust.
The electronics included the ASG-18 radar - a precursor of the AWG-9
onboard the F-14. The Sabre had nothing even remotely approaching this.
The sr71 was basically a giant fuel tank feeding those wacky engines.
(ok, a non sequitor)
Of course, this can just mean the Blackbird was a side tangent/end of generation aircraft with a bunch of fancy stuff added to it, not
a different generation.
To me it seems that the sabre was a different gen- given that the A4 was
a strong step beyond the Sabre and predated the F4, which was contemporary to the SR71.
In my mind I line up F4 with SR71.
The Sabre doesn't qualify to be in the F4's company.
It is 2 steps behind.
I admit that there can be steps within a generation, but is 2 steps enough
to really explain the difference in tech?
EDIT: oops!
I thought you were writing that the line between sr71 and sabre was
separating them. You were indicating the opposite, that the line
was a connector. And you were refuting the validity of that.
My bad.
doh.
