Computer game soundtracks
I was just wondering who your favorite video game soundtrack composers are. Of course there's Mark Morgan who did a terrific job on both Fallouts (AND Tactics for that matter..there isn't much in favor for that game but Morgans soundtrack was excellent) and Planescape Torment of course, but I'm curious if there are any others you really like.
I really enjoyed Jeremy Soules Icewind Dale soundtrack and the stuff Ben Houge did for Arcanum but my all time favorite composer must be Akira Yamaoka of the Silent Hill series. One of the most refreshing and experimental soundtracks I can imagine. Especially the latest two installments of the game.
So, let the flaming commence! I predict about three 'serious' comments to this entry before this topic mutates into something completely different, as all topics do on this forum. A little feature here on DAC that makes me giddy with joy and makes me get down on my knees and thank all the gods I've heard of for the beautiful world I live in every single day since I've stumbled across this forum.
Oh, and the Max Payne soundtracks were pretty awesome too...yes, kill me now.

Can't think of anything right now but Monkey Island and Lemmings, probably because of their annoying-ness. The theme in Elite was pretty groovy until I learned it was some classical composition. I don't really put that much thought on music when playing games, although it has an important role creating the right atmosphere etc, but glorifying it is kinda gay. I'd rather listen to catchy midis than pompous orchestras/fantasy crap. For all I care, you can wank off to Hidetoshi Yakamura or whatever.
Are you so apparently bothered by the thoughts and opinions of others ? Or are you, rather, simply and zealously conforming to plebian expectations ?VasikkA wrote:until I learned it was some classical composition.
By the eyes and to the topic - I do not remember those responsible so much as what they are responsible for. Even the latter is meaningless, as all music is intolerably awful.

Heroes of Might & Magic II had a great soundtrack. I remember listening it on my stereo long time ago.
Actually there are many games that have great music (like the ones already mentioned by others) but some games have a soundtrack that just simply suck. I didn't really like any of the tracks on Deus Ex, System Shock 2 or Half-Life... the best parts were the parts were it was mainly ambient or just silent.

I've always been partial to the Max Payne II theme (always struck me as being better constructed than the first one), the Deus Ex score (the second one was okay musically, but not nearly as good), and the scores to both Homeworld games (It pisses me off to no end that they never released two on CD). i'm also a big fan of the music from Arcanum and Mafia, as well as the music from Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War (Really captures the feel of the setting very well).

Warcraft II. Midi or CD, it doesn't matter, it's totally catchy. Tetris, too. Obviously Super Mario Land. Contra's music is the shit as well. 8 and 16 bit games always had the best music.
Personally I don't really like Jeremy Soule because all his music sounds kind of the same. Thus, whenever he does music for a game, it reminds me of the music in NWN, and that's not a good thing.
