<strong>[ Community -> Article ]</strong> - More info on <a href="http://wikipocalypse.duckandcover.cx/in ... title=Duck and Cover">Community: Duck and Cover</a>

<p>So there was a lot of backed up user submitted news, some going all
the way back to October 2005. I decided to consolidate it into
one huge newspost. Read at your own pace.</p><p> </p><p><strong>VX Trauma</strong> let me know about a <a target="_self" href="http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/03/31/nevada ... l">weapons test planned for Nevada</a>.</p>
<blockquote>
<p><em><span class="postlink">LAS
VEGAS, Nevada (AP) -- Plans for a Pentagon-led experiment that involves
detonating 700 tons of explosives in the desert drew criticism from
state leaders and a disarmament activist.

The explosion scheduled for June 2 at the Nevada Test Site is part
of an effort to design a weapon that can penetrate solid rock
formations in which a country might store nuclear weapons or other
weapons of mass destruction.

"I am concerned that tests of this magnitude have been planned
without providing Nevadans with any information about the possible
impact on their health or safety," said Senate Democratic leader Harry
Reid in a statement Thursday.</span></em> </p>
</blockquote>
<p> </p>
<p><strong>Geno</strong> told us about a <a target="_self" href="http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?si ... ss">Zombie MMORPG</a> that's in the works:</p>
<blockquote>
<p><em>Warcry has a very short blurb about a just announced Horror-genre
Massively Multiplayer game. Titled Exanimus, the game looks to be set
in a post-apocalyptic zombie setting. From the piece: "While most of
the world is dead, there are small pockets of survivors that exist in
barricaded cities across the globe. Players of Exanimus will have the
option of playing as a living survivor or as one of the dead roaming
the earth. Exanimus will allow players to experience a MMO based in a
horror genre by creating a dark and visually "intense" environment.
Exanimus is expected to be rated "Mature" and not intended for anyone
under the age of 18." </em></p>
</blockquote>
<p> </p>
<p><strong>Smiley</strong> shared with us quite a few things. First, the "final" release date for <em>STALKER</em>, which is now scheduled for September.</p>
<p>
</p><blockquote>
<p><em><a target="_self" href="http://www.megagames.com/news/html/pc/s ... a></em></p>
</blockquote>
<p>He also told me about a new post apocalyptic MMORPG called <em>Huxley</em>.

</p>
<p> </p>
<blockquote>
<p><em>
Running on the Unreal 3 engine. I haven't the time to watch the movie, but I think the pic's look somewhat alright.

<a href="http://megagames.com/news/html/movies/huxleymovie.shtml" target="_blank">http://megagames.com/news/html/movies/h ... e.shtml</a>

It's post apoc, and it's an mmo, so it can't be all bad...</em>
</p>
</blockquote>
<p>Also, some <em>STALKER</em> developer <a target="_self" href="http://www.megagames.com/news/html/pc/s ... >responses to rumors</a>: </p>
<blockquote>
<p><em>To clarify the concerns of some fans regarding S.T.A.L.K.E.R.-related
rumours to have appeared recently on the net, GSC Game World believes
it necessary to explain the following:

- The project is on the stage of beta approval and is being actively developed in close cooperation with the publisher.

- The team has undergone certain reductions, particularly in the art
section, due to all the graphics-related works being almost complete
(out of 40 people 5 were dismissed). None of the leads, programmers and
moreover, testers may not be reduced at any time.

- Regarding the technology leak, none of the designers gone has the
rights to the game's engine (all the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. technologies,
including the X-Ray engine and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.-2 engine belong to the
company). Even if the current or next-generation engine would appear on
the net, their legal use is impossible. GSC does not intend to sell its
technologies in the nearest time, so as does not intend to postpone the
release of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl due to rumours of that
kind. </em>
</p>
</blockquote>
<p> </p>
<p>Not to be outdone, <strong>Geno</strong> fires back with some <a target="_self" href="http://science.slashdot.org/science/06/ ... ">rantings on the end of the world</a>:</p>
<p>
</p><blockquote><em>James Lovelock, the planetary
scientist famous for his <a target="_self" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?tit ... 6283">Gaia
Theory</a>, writes in today's Independent of his belief that it is
already too late to divert an environmental catastrophe which will see
much of human civilisation destroyed. Fearing it too late to be green,
he instead suggests communities plan for survival in a Mad Max type
world with limited resources ruled by violent warlords. "We have to
keep in mind the awesome pace of change and realise how little time is
left to act, and then each community and nation must find the best use
of the resources they have to sustain civilisation for as long as they
can." He suggests we should be writing a practical guidebook printed on
long lasting paper containing "the basic accumulated scientific
knowledge of humanity</em></blockquote>
<p> </p>
<blockquote>
<p> </p>
</blockquote>
<p><strong>Haris</strong> showed me an online game set in the <em>Fallout</em> universe.</p>
<blockquote>
<p>
</p><blockquote>
<p><em><a href="http://ashworld.webd.pl/" target="_blank">http://ashworld.webd.pl/</a>

Its set in fallout universe. And basicly you make a char and fight
other players in same area. To fight you just go to ladder and fight
poeple in same area as you. If you die just use skill first aid or
doctor to heal up. Than you can fight again. Its still in alpha testing
so dont pick no races except Ghouls, Mutant and Humans or they will
delete your char.

Ncr is a recomended town cause it has a nice weapon shop. You gain money and expirience by killing other players. </em>

<p> </p>
<p><strong>Mismatch</strong> wanted to let us know about a <em>Max Payne</em> mod set in the <em>Fallout</em> universe.</p>
<blockquote>
<p> </p>
<p>
</p><blockquote>
<p>
dunno if its been covered, some max payne mod set in the fallout universe.

too bad thats its max payne though, since itll undoubtedly suck ass.

<p><strong>Haris</strong> swings back with some news about a post apocalyptic <em>Ultima Online</em> server.</p>
<blockquote>
<p> </p>
<p>
</p><blockquote>
<p><em><a href="http://www.arydia.com/" target="_blank">http://www.arydia.com/</a></em></p>
</blockquote>
<p> </p>
<p>
</p><blockquote>
<p><em>What is Arydia?

Arydia is a shard made in RunUO. We are going for a post-apocolyptic
themed shard. We have a custom map and are in the process of redoing
the artwork of lots of ground tiles, and building tiles to give the
shard a more "destroyed" feel to it.

Arydia will be a roleplaying shard, and will have a world that can
keep players interested with and without staff support. This is very
important to us.

We are not yet open to the public, so do not expect to play or be
able to help players ingame. Estimated time of opening is unknown, and
open beta will not happen until after staff have tested everything
fully. This is not a half-ass attempt at a shard.</em></p>

<p>

</p>
</blockquote>
<p><strong>Emn1ty</strong> wanted to share with us news about a post apocalyptic game called<em> Danankia</em>:</p>
<blockquote>
<p> </p>
<p>
</p><blockquote>
<p><em>This is an MMORPG that takes place in the post-apocolyptic future, on
another planet, which is the sole inhabitant of its system.You must
fight for survival in the most harsh and desolate landscape the human
race has ever traversed. This is not just another planet, but your new
home.

Where it begins.....

Earth, once beautiful and lush, is dead. The people left on that
cursed planet began the biggest exile ever known.To reach the next
habitable planet they built StarArch, a huge spacecraft capable of
transferring a whole generation to distant galaxies. Near the
completion of the project the crew of the ship was meant to be chosen
by a public lottery.

Multicorp, the greatest megacorporation disagreed with the selecting
method and decided to take over the project. As a technological
superpower, Multicorp quickly took out its competitors. With its brand
new StarArch, Multicorp left others to die with the planet.

A New Home

Danankai was the first planet suitable for colonization discovered
by the StarArch program. The original atmosphere of the planet was too
thin and Multicorp had to set up several air generators across the
surface. In addition, Multicorp had to build huge domes to seal the
people from the radiation. The air supply was calculated to last
forever.

Danankai itself is a lifeless desert planet with the only water under the ground surface. There are no oceans, no lakes,

no rivers, nothing......

Your Role

To SURVIVE. In Danankai you must alter your perception to fit the
aggressive and cynical environment. Starry eyes might be fatal in the
wastelands. You must be able to instantly tell if your fellow traveler
is truly your friend or if you should just dispose of him before it&rsquo;s
too late. Bumping into a wanderer in the desert gets to you think twice
about whether or not to stop for a little chit-chat. Surviving the
Danankai isn't all about handling aggressors and dangerous environment;
you also need to learn some skills to make a living with. Like what was
previously said; this is your new home.

Our Game

To make this game, we are using the RealmCrafter engine (more info <a href="http://www.realmcrafter.com/" target="_blank">here</a>)

<p><strong>Madmaxx</strong> submitted some news about a <em>Mad Max</em> short film: </p>
<blockquote>
<p> </p>
<blockquote>
<p><em>The Last Guy Film Festival, presented by Old Spice, seeks short
filmmakers and movie buffs. Featuring short films by the Neistat
Brothers, the Last Guy Film Festival is your chance to check out a new
crop of talent and gain inspiration to create your own films. Soon it
will be your turn to upload a video of your own material as well as a

<p>And last, but not least...</p>

<p><strong>Anonymous </strong>sent in news about a Gene Hackman civil defense film that has been found.</p>
<blockquote>
<blockquote>
<p><em><a href="http://www.boingboing.net/2006/03/28/lo ... an_ci.html" target="_blank">http://www.boingboing.net/2006/03/28/lo ... ci.html</a>

Ken Sitz of the online atomic kitsch history archive Conelrad says,

We just unearthed a relic from the 'Golden Age of Homeland Security' -
Gene Hackman in the civil defense training film Community Shelter
Planning. He appeared in this 22 minute Army Pictorial Center
production just months before his role in Bonnie and Clyde (1967).

Link to more about the "lost" film, and here are two video clips
featuring Gene Hackman as the CD Regional Officer Donald Ross making a
pitch to Bucks County PA commissioners for the government's "Community
Shelter Planning" program. He's very convincing in a pre-Katrina
Michael Brown sort of way. Google Video Link 1 (3:40 min) Google Video
Link 2 (2:00 min). YouTube Link for both clips. </em></p>
<p> </p>
</blockquote>
<p> </p></blockquote>
<p> </p>
<p> </p>
<p>That's pretty much it. Some of this news was probably already
posted, but it was left in the submit news thing so I posted it
anyways. Now, all we need is progress on the new site design,
interviews with Bethesda, and a good new <em>Fallout</em> game. This is also probably the longest newspost in <a href="http://www.duckandcover.cx" target="_self">DAC</a> history. Thank you. That is all for today.

Just to make it clear i am in no way involved with that Ultima Online server.

Even thoe i was offered to work on 5 different mmo projects with fallout or post apoc related themes i had to turn them all down cause of lack of time.

Or maybe you offered to work on these 'mmo projects', but wound up having all 5 applications (/offers) be summarily rejected. :che:

Some* of these sound explicitly remote to the 'Postapocalyptic' theme DAC news carry.

Therefore even I can make a newspost. Observe: I found a postapocalyptic webcomic called bluntly Post-Nuke Comic. I have not read it yet though so I can't be held responsible for content.

* Overwhelmig

P.S. :drunk:

I am by no contortion of imagination a connoisseur of comics, electronic or otherwise. However, Post-Nuke Comic, is, indubitably, utter wank*. This indisputably telling revelation was not at all hard won or unfound(ed), such was the incessancy of utter wank. Utter wank you shall undoubtedly, with a sufficient stock of a certain synonym for bravery and lack of good taste/sense, discover anew.

Consider your selves sternly rebuked. Or don't. :drunk:
