I could have moved 50 miles out of town and found a place roughly the same size as the one I own now for about $75k. I got mine for $95k, and monthly mortage (including taxes and such) is $700 even. I also got the lowest APR because I'm a first time home owner with awesome credit.

Fuck, are you guys talking about actual HOMES? Are they like cardboard boxes next to the street or are they actually decent?

The houses in my neighborhood go for around 1 mil D:

Rural areas, depressed states = lower prices (for some things)

Houses especially. Gotta find those pics from the picture thread that show Ryno's house.

Look at the house, look at the area.

Then the #s will probably make sense.

Double Post!

I remember back in the 80's my units got a 135k townhouse in the burbs of DC about 2 blocks from Rt.123( major route from D.C. running west through Tyson's Corner- a heavy duty part of the East Coast Tech Corridor. (2 miles away, another 7-10 to D.C.)). 200ft. from Bike Trail/park, 500 ft. from Emergency Med. Center, 600 ft. from Town Hall, 800 Ft. from Police Station, 1000 ft. from Fire/Paramedic station, 800 ft. from elementary school, 1 mile from High School, 1.25 mile from Intermediate School... tons of shops and restaurants within 1 mile...
Don't even need a car, 5-10 min bus ride to the Metro- then train into D.C.

Now its worth about 2.5 x the original price.

They should sell and move out to the cheapass boonies, spend the rest on an RV and be badass old people.

Oh, but the gas prices for one of those...

meh

You don't get benefits or any guff? It seems a lot of stuff is luxury items. I don't really believe anyone can't survive on just bare essentials, though they always seem to get da luxuries of life and still complain.

I get £30 a week just for going to college. mabye 10p a day for dinner, I walk to and from college. Don't have to pay any rent or anything. That leaves about, £88 a month. I spend mabye half of that on beer, so £45 a month is saved. I don't have a job or anything either lol.

What in the fuck.
Is North America the only continent where people actually have to pay for their fucking education?

Uh... Mandy, did you not notice how cheap higher education is in Canada? I'm going to McGill, one of the best schools in the country (hell, the continent) for about $3,000 CDN a year plus books. It's only America where the government hates the people and doesn't want them to get educated so that immigrants can take their jobs/der jerbs.

I don't have to pay a dime for my university-level edumacation. Still, benefits alone aren't enough to cover all expenses. Hell, not even the rent.

Boo-fucking-hoo, indeed.

Also making education expensive guarantees hordes of recruits for the army. And too much of education makes the indoctrination more complicated.

The problem with that is the Army doesn't really want hordes.

Many if not most are middle class people.

They have any number of reasons for joining.

The "hordes" = cheap labor that isn't smart enough to organize.

Ya, if you apply to the army, they'll pay 50% of your school fees. That's cool.

And you get a pension after 20 yrs.

When I did uni it was costing me around 4k a year not including travel (don't go to uni in another city without moving there). It would've cost me a shit load more if I put it on HEX-debt. Basically they let you study, and cram on the interest. It also costs some 15% more regardless.

It's money for freedom. And freedom has a very cheap price, it appears. Here, they'll pay for your education(so long as it's useful to them), and then you're theirs for three more years.
Combat soldiers get a discount for school.

And yet it's still not worth it.

Theres no way you are paying a total 3k for school a year because thats what I paid for a year of college.

Maybe you're being had by your province? IIRC Quebec gives students a better deal than Ontario.

I have always been wondering about American students, how "bad" they have it. Yes I have actually thought about moving to the US of A to study.

Is that insanely stupid ?

I already fear the reply
