If "overpowered monsters" piss you off, don't play Diablo.
There are a few monsters in the game that are out of balance, and you just have to be careful of them. For example, a randomly spawned rare monster that has the "Fire enchanted" mod can kill your amazing character in one hit when he dies. Also, scroll down for info on Claw Vipers.

PArtying up, doing team baal runs... or 2x2.. great stuff. PvP, too, but to a lesser extent, at least for me. Duel PvP are pretty boring in D2. Unlike 2x2, which I think is the single best format for competition in Diablo2 -- there were lots of LAN tournaments based on 2x2 skirmishes. Solo PvP is just too imba.
If interested in more or less balanced 1on1 PvP:

However, I think that's Europe only.
I know, single player can be a lot of fun (played it for ~4 years), but at the same time it can be very frustrating, and certainly gets more tedious than playing online.

It's fun for PvP maybe, but not PvM. I did use rushes, but only to an extent: I ran through the first 30-40 levels, because they are pretty boring and during which you can't really die or encounter something fun. After that, however, i'd be bored to have you hand held by some other people like you are in kindeygarten. OMG< dont touch that beastie, i'll kill it for you. Puppies. I can hardly think of a better way to kill a HC challenge.
I like rushing, because I want to be able to reach the full potential of my character as soon as possible. For example, most caster chars use Arachnid Mesh, unique Spiderweb Sash, but it has an annoyingly high level requirement (80). I like planning out my builds beforehand, meaning that the 20%faster cast rate from Arach will make a big difference on the killing/survival potential of my character. I do not like having my hand held in Diablo, that's why I mainly play solo. The only reason for why I actually join/make public games is because I need to have more people in the game (monsters give more experience).
By the way Metallix, if you ever make a high level character, you will know how difficult it is for experience to come by, and dieing is disasterous. My Druid is very close to level 96 now, and I use various leveling techniques to get him more experience. For example:
When I go to a Baalrun, while the person there is teleing to the Throne, I go to the Halls of Vaught to kill Nihlathak (level 95 monster, gives quite a bit of experience on players 8). Nihlathak has a very dangerous Corpse Explosion attack, but that is easily avoided. However, what makes Nihlathak dangerous, is the fact that often, Claw Vipers spawn in the area around him. These Claw Vipers have an extremely deadly attack (I have 4.8k life overall, and with 1 hit, they can take away about 4.5k), but instead of avoiding the area, I go there, because I take it as a challenge and because I need the experience.
By the way, many people play HC with chicken, but I don't because it's just turning HC into SC for you. Like someone said: "What's the point in playing a game that you cannot lose?"

For me, Diablo offers absolutely 0 fun factor for dungeon exploration, storyline, etc (even though I've played it ever since it really came out, I'm still not sure what it's quite about). For me it's all about getting a character that can rip shit.
