Phoenix Wright (DS game)

It was discussed in the DS thread, but thought it deserved its own thread. Phoenix Wright is the best adventure game I've played in years, in fact I can't remember a recent story-based game (not necessarily adventure) that's better. It's pretty lengthy, not because the puzzles are hard, just because there's LOADS of text dialogue to read through, most of it optional, but I find I really want to read it all. You can spent lots of time examining each scene, and instead of having 'that's a wooden chair' response, each time you examine something you typically get a long conversation with someone who's in the room about it. And the conversations are so well written that you want to read them all. Just goes to show you absolutely don't need 3rd rate voice acting to increase immersion and build characters.

The characters are very well developed, initially many of them came across as cliches but they develop over the chapters of the game until you grow to really want to see what happens to them next.

The game's also got a great sense of humour, one guy you meet is a leet hacker geek and he speaks in hacker talk... numbers instead of letters, pwning, and so on. It impressed me especiually since the game is a japanese translation. Then there's this monster hiding in a lake that you've got to track down, the police lend you their secret, high tech tools [spoilers] ... which consist of a puppy, a fishing rod and a metal detector. The dog proceeds to eat all the hotdogs at some guy's stand, ruining his business. [/spoilers]

Anyway, if you've got a DS you probably should check this game out, it gets better and better the more you play. And like I said, it's really long (I haven't finished it yet after more than a week of playing) mainly due to the amount of text and optional stuff to read, which you'll definately want to read.

That's great. Seems like games without the latest graphics and effects, based on text dialogue, characters and storylines, aren't dead. They're just only able to get funding on the DS. <3 Nintendo!

Any emulations? It sounds like a great game, but I won't buy a DS just to play it...

I think there are some DS emulaters but they don't work that well. Can't you rent a DS or something?

Anyway, so far my DS has been worth the purchase and looks to continue that way with good games coming out in the future.

You can rent them? I'm moving to London in August, do you know of a place whence I could mayhap rent one?

Hmm, no. But what I did when GTA:SA came out was buy a PS2 and the game, play it for a few days then use the returns policy some stores have in the UK to get a complete refund. Not sure if those policies have been changed but I'm sure there's somewhere...
