Since when? There are 2 different things, first of all, a game getting rated as "Mature", or something like that, so it's not meant for kids, or a game that is on a completely different level so that kids won't actually enjoy it. Come on, I seriously doubt that most 10 year old gamers stick to Pokemon (except for Koki).
I consider Oblivion an all family game, maybe even too juvenile for most adults, and of Bethesda's part, it was a huge success. What's preventing from perverting Fallout in the same fashion? They've got nothing to lose.

I think the pink elephant in the room that nobody wants to acknowledge is the fact the Beth would probably be successful (commercially) with that approach.

Well, then I guess they at least desire to interact with the original concept of Fallout well enough, without, needless to say, it's consent. To interact with the fans in any possible way, however, they'd need to be there, pushing the buttons -- from what I've seen so far, the non-pr sector is in hiding, and the pr sector hands out stone walls. In any case, I don't see why they'd desire interacting with "us" when they're clearly running a race of their own, vigilante style. They're like Batman while he was still on the off-side with Gordon.
Yeah, clearly, bethsoft doesn't give two shits about fallout fans. Even Pete Hines or whatever his name was, when he did that pre-Oblivion interview, said as much. With the subtlety of a sledgehammer, he basically told off both fans of daggerfall and fans of fallout. Hell, he even told off fans of morrowind. And he made a point to go through his spiel again when the interviewer mentioned fallout 3. "We're not reaching out to anyone, we're not trying to please anyone, etc. etc. This is our game, and if you don't like it, don't buy it."
I imagine the 'pre-marketing blitz' bethsoft puts on in the next year or so will pretty much declare what kind of game fallout 3 is going to be. Just as how we could pretty much disregard everything beth said about olbivion's super intelligent AI and the amazingly cool awesomely good looking stupendously awesome game world, because both were two slightly different flavors of bullshit.
Speaking of truly well-scripted AI, I am pumped about Gothic 3.
The fact that they won't even come out and say they're using oblivion's engine scares me just a little. Because, it probably means that these last years have been spent building an even bigger system hog that they're going to plug some campy, oblivion-with-guns bullshit into. Now woth 50% more lens flares.
Fucking how hard is it to render eight hundred fucking square miles of fucking endless nothing? How bad is it when I'm actually hoping for morrowind with guns?
I just started playing Oblivion last night, mostly just to see how amazing this super awesome happy engine was and I have to say it didn't live up to all the hype I read about. I had everything maxed out given my generous specs and the game looked okay, but i noticed the engine depended alot on silly hollywood like visual effects that just would not work for fallout.
I spent about an hour customizing my character's face, which was probably the most interesting part of the game. Otherwise, the remaining hours I spent wandering the forest and picking mushrooms, stealing some douche's horse (only to have him chase me for a few kilometers in full iron armor) I tried to give the horse some lettuce, guessing it was hungry and that Oblivion must have supported some sort of bullshit hunger feature, but the retarded drop function only works about 10% of the time, so in the frenzy of clicks I accidentally slashed the horsie with my sword only to get kicked a few times for my troubles.
If Fallout 3 doesn't have a Mature rating, i'm not buying. Take comfort in knowing that you'll be able to download Fallout 3 in one night (like i did with Oblivion) and then decide if it deserves your money.
I just realized that so was Oblivion By the gameplay I was sure it was teen. Maybe they had to give an M rating for all the suggestive furry sex potential?
There was a hidden, barely accessable texture within the game where nipples were clearly shown, that was supposedly used in adding female cloth textures and for some reason left behind in the final build. Obviously an outrage ensued.
"My 3 year old toddler shouldn't be exposed to this kind of pornography."
EDIT: Ha, ha, ha, ha. My superficious human shell is contorting with laughter.
The only thing I can think of that would prevent them from touting the rapture that is Fallout 3 is that there are insufficently fiber-fed cows at Bethsoft.
They're waiting until the time is ripe for them to whip off the collective latex mask, revealing John Romero, who will state 'FALLOUT 3 WILL MAKE YOU IT'S BITCH.'
And then, the Fallout fandom will stare dumbfoundedly, their brains deadlocked in the decision which part of the game to flame first.

Nothing like a slow-moving localized apocalypse to really make you think about proper data backup procedures.
I wish people would calm down with the oblivion-bashing. I cant help but feel its somewhat an exaggerated counter-reaction to the massive success it's enjoying.
Any way you look at it, oblivion is a big step forwards for games, and also for the retro RPGers among us (me included). Take a look at games around you these days. One word - LINEAR. All of the mainstream games are. Even the so-called comeback of RPGs was a big disappointment for me (baldurs gate, planescape torment, etc). Theres no WORLD, its just a linear adventure game with an RPG flair. Final Fantasy basically.
I like (but dont love) oblivion, but i am SO damn happy its been successful.
If it wasnt for the success of oblivion you can bet your ass fallout 3 would be something like system shock, at BEST - an FPS with a hint of RPG elements where the story and plot run on rails. Thank god for oblivion. It has proved an exploration-centric non-linear game can be financially successful, and this is opening LOTS of doors.
Oblivion is the only mainstream game since Fallout 2 has had that kind of wasteland/darklands "a world for you to explore" feeling.
Besides, ultimately, technology is not what makes a game great. Greatness isnt determined by something as ultimately mundane as a certain technological implementation. Do it right, do it well, give it a great, living world, and I dont give a rat's ass if its isometric or first person. I'd PREFER the former, but if was going to be great in isometric, it'll still be great in first person.
Bethesda is the only major studio that still has an old-school retro-rpg _HEART_ - just not technological execution.
Compare oblivion to darklands - whats the difference? While baldurs gate - isometric though it is - has more in common with adventure games like sanitarium than with ultima, wasteland, or fallout.
And as for bethesda's comments about "dont like it, dont buy it" etc, have some understanding. Can you imagine how annoying it must be for them to be constantly being lectured by fans of fallout? Personally if I was a developer on Fallout, the kind of discussions and posts I've seen, by now I'd be wanting to turn it into friggin Katamari Falloutey or Dance Dance Detonation just to piss everyone off and get it all over with.

Did you even play Baldur's Gate or Torment? Do you know the reason they will always, for ever and ever, bar nothing, no exceptions and in every way, be better than Oblivion, which you hail as the return of good RPGs? Do you know what it is? Do you know why Oblivion will always and forever be the retarded step-child and laughing stock of RPG afficianados?
Dialogue.
You're a complete moron. Oblivion had ZERO dialogue. YOU CAN NOT HAVE AN RPG WITHOUT DIALOGUE. It was an exploration simulator. Moron.
