System Shock 2

Post by Frater Perdurabo »

Well, my torrent just finished. A few years ago, I gave the game a go, but I had a corrupt CD-ROM so that it would always crash whenever I got to this one area and I could never get farther.

Now, I want to try again. I've read some walkthroughs, but they don't really explain the basics, i.e. is it a good idea to choose one tree and stick to it, or should I have a fair balance between the 3? I was thinking about going all-out tech, but the psi area also looked good. My intention is to get as much RPG experience/storyline from the game.

Also, any kinds of hints would be useful, but no spoilers please ;(((

1) Assault Rifle is best gun in the game.
2) You WANT Hack skill.
3) You can hack turrets with Hack 4.
4) Don't waste ammo. Learn Way of the Wrench.
5) Research 1 is very nice thing to have.
6) Stack things you don't need for now in the elevator.

Once I had finished all of my psi training, I got a hairy feeling that it's not the way I wanted to play the game, so I went back and joined the Navy instead, specializing in Hacking and Research.

1) When do I get the gun and which skill does it require?
2) Ok I got that ;)
4) No other option at the moment :|
5) Got that at level 2 at the moment
6) Thanks, I guess that solves equipment problems

Also, I read the beginning of some guide and managed to acquire the basketball. What do I use that for?

And holy shit, the game is hard. It took me a few loadings to figure out that the hybrids were surveying the turrets, so I decided to hack the security system before starting my explorations. Otherwise I was just overrun ~~

The way of the wrench seems quite difficult, but I guess that I'll pick it up on the way.

My god, this game really looks awesome.

I never bothered with Rebirth, it's too... corny.
About Deepfried, I don't even know what's that.
And the texture mod is called SHTUP.

You'll find your first AR at Hydroponics, which will be third level you have access to. It requires Standard 6.

Basketball is used for the easter egg. You'll know when to use it.

One thing I did was to keep my pistol loaded with anti-robot rounds, my shotgun filled with anti-biological rounds, and my assault rifle loaded with plain rounds. That way, I never had to dick around reloading my gun when confronted by a rumbler instead of a cyborg. I'd just switch to the appropriate weapon and the right ammo would be there.

I liked Rebirth a lot. And yes, Research 1 is absolutely essential. Don't worry about picking the "right" path - ideally, it's fun to go back and play the game with each path because the experience is usually quite different. (That said, you picked the right one. Hacking for teh win.)

Don't listen to Koki, the wrench sucks.

How well did the game incorporate RPG elements? The reason I ask is I'm very intrigued by Bio Shock which should be comming out pretty soon and I'm hoping it will keep these RPG elements if they were in fact worth a damn.

Link?

This thread makes me want to play SS2 again with texture mods and chit. The question is: what mods to install? I can find at least four different texture mods. Also, are weapon balancing mods worthwhile? kthx
suppose you're thinking about a plate of shrimp. suddenly somebody will say like 'plate' or 'shrimp' or 'plate of shrimp', out of the blue, no explanation.

When you get to the sector corrupted by The Flesh or whatever, reload and replay everything from the start.

I'm gearing up for a 4player co-op myself, hopefully this weekend.

Don't use energy weapons, they're shit at the end.

Should I just stick to one area of guns, i.e. the first one, and throw the rest of my points into hacking, research, etc.

Also, I was thinking, are Maintenance and Repair useful?

And I was contemplating taking Modify. Good idea?

Depends on the diff you're playing on. On Easy you can get Standard, few Energy, and have all PSI tiers. On Impossible keep to one.

Maintenance obviously is, though I wouldn't put more than 4. Repair isn't.
And I was contemplating taking Modify. Good idea?
No. There is enough French-Epstein Devices or whatever they were called.

And play single first before coop, because coop takes all tension and fear away from the game.

Very well, particularly for an FPS. Who knows about Bio Shock, but SS2 is as close to an RPG/FPS hybrid as we've gotten so far.

Rebirth. Besides that, ehh. I'm not a fan of mods in general.

That's true, but SS2 remains the a better game overall and DX also isn't so hot as an RPG.

Or an FPS.

...why'd I like it again? Oh, yes. Flatlander woman.
