I think it's worth getting and can be found for cheap online. The main focus is the slow pace of capital ships. If you remember watching a number of them dueling it out in Freespace 1 or 2, it's the same thing except you're in control of those ships much like an RTS. You can customize weapon loadouts and add wings of various fighters or bombers and other deals. From the beginning you're stuck with one ship called Angelwing or something that has an alien artifact that launches and fucks shit up.
I don't remember what the story was. It had to with an evil alien presence and the Angelwing technology getting more powerful. I dunno, it was weird. But the battles were crazy and graphics are damn good.

Nexus was fucking awesome.

Also, Barbarian Invasion sucked. If they had applied some of the concepts (i.e. larger territories [thus less land], higher maintenance costs, higher build costs, etc.) from BI back into the original Rome it would've been fucking amazing, but the whole LOLLER BARBARIANS NEVER DIE AND WHEN YOU FINALLY WIPE THEM OUT THEY GO HORDE AND TURN INTO AN UNSTOPPABLE ARMY WHICH, IF YOU MANAGE TO WIPE IT OUT, WILL PROBABLY JUST HORDE AGAIN!!!!! LOLLERSZ.

Oh, man, Nexus was pretty awesome. It looked absolutely beautiful and was fun to play, as well. The plot and characters are fairly forgettable, but it's just so much fun controlling fleets of one to six (and occasionally more) capital ships in these really intense battles. It's a really great game.

Theoretically you don't build buildings in Homeworld =/

Although a lot of time is wasted on research.
I dunno, I just find HW/HW2 much better due to the theme and the shitloads of ships that you can send in the face of enemies.

No, but in HW2, you do have to build the various production facilities before you can build ships.
