North Korea claims nuclear weapons test
Official news agency says no radioactive leakage

SEOUL, South Korea - North Korea said Monday it has performed its first-ever nuclear weapons test. The countryÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s official Korean Central News Agency said the test was performed successfully and there was no radioactive leakage from the site.

Ã¢â‚¬Å“The nuclear test is a historic event that brought happiness to the our military and people,Ã¢â‚¬Â� KCNA said.

South Korean officials could not immediately confirm the report.

South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun convened an urgent meeting of security advisers over the issue, Yonhap reported.

The North said last week it would conduct a nuclear test as part of its deterrent against a possible U.S. invasion.

The director of South KoreaÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s monitoring center that is watching for a test with sound and seismic detectors declined to immediately comment on the report. The U.S. Geological Survey said it had detected no seismic activity in North Korea, although it was not clear whether a blast would be strong enough for its sensors.

lets cherish that thought of nkorea invading the south w allout attack. including multiple thousands hvy artillery pieces lobbing chemical gas rounds across the border many shots per minute. continueously for an hour or two. would total up to to 1 million gas rounds into a densly populated area. would be a kickass movie.

I'm probably gonna get flagged as a terrorist for this, but I think NK are almost justified in doing their test. I mean, bush has basically said that he's going to work his way down the Axis of Evil list, and NK's next.

Anyone found a reliable source for the power of the blast? All releases I've seen so far vary wildly between 500 tons and 20 kilotons.

I've been told it was actually smaller than the bombs used against Japan to end WW2, but I'll try and find some figures to verify.

I doubt it was very big as N. Korea doesn't really have many resources at it's disposal, N. Korea has an excellent PR department on the other hand.

I've also heard that they have enough resources to build one.. to thirty nuclear weapons. Is all of this pure speculation or what? The richter scale measurement was somewhere between 2 and 6, and I guess their range capability is somewhere in the area of half a kilometer and 15 astronomical units. I guess there won't be any facts till after the bombs start dropping.

Being that they've not allowed any nuclear inspectors or really given us any evidence since they've claimed to build Nuclear Weapons, it's all pure speculation and logical guesses. For all we know, they just exploded a really big train again and that's what we're seeing. Ofcourse they'll claim they have nukes - in Kim Jong Il's weird mind, that'll say "HEY U.S.! DON'T MESS RITH US OR ERSE!!" For all we know, it's a bluff for N. Korea to gain some respect. They're highly over presenting their ability to wage war with nuclear weapons.
