Yes, obviously they're going to ignore the mass fellation they received from the media and all that money idiot console kiddies threw at them en masse. They'll do this in favor of the vocal minority that hold the current license they're working in high prestige and with the added bonus of a nostalgic adoration that has set an impossibly high standard for any future incarnations. Yes. They'll do this. And the money tree is just outside your window. And the high school pool is on the third floor. And I've got a bridge to sell you.Icabod wrote:Maybe us watching them and criticising is causing them to watch us for ideas, then us watching them adapt to an overall opinion of 'our' game is making us criticize them further; causing more confusion. And then the cycle continues...
The answer to your first question is shaddup.
honestly, i couldn't give two shits if the combat is real time as long as combat isn't compulsory (that means multiple solution paths for almost everything), and it's still implemented well (ie. not so trigger happy). as i wrote in some other thread located somewhere, real time with "optional" tb is a poor compromise (look at torment or fallout tactics) - because it feels like cheating when you do pause, and, worse, it ruins the feel.
how did this thread going from warmly welcoming the bethsoft dev to issuing ultimatums (without any reasons behind them other than "that's the way we want it rofl" i might add) and posting pictures of dishwashers full of dildos. jesus christ. save us all.

suppose you're thinking about a plate of shrimp. suddenly somebody will say like 'plate' or 'shrimp' or 'plate of shrimp', out of the blue, no explanation.

You know what you're getting into when you take this job, so it's not like I'm surprised. Fallout fans are... Fallout fans. There are those of you who will despise me and the game we're making based on general principle. "If it's not Van Buren, it's not Fallout 3." Some of you hate Oblivion. Nothing I can say or do will change that. And that's fine by me; it's your right. I'm not going to waste anyone's time trying to convince you otherwise. But the reality is that Bethesda has been granted the rare opportunity to preserve the Fallout license, and it's a responsibility we take very seriously.
It's also not really my style to respond to confrontational posts or freak out over criticism, so it's going to be damn near impossible to goad me into a flame war. You guys do just fine on that front without me.
I also know it sucks that you've got the lead designer posting and he can't say a damn thing about the game. Unfortunately, there's nothing I can do about that. Otherwise, you'll probably find me pretty accessible and accomodating.

We appreciate the lip service, we really do. It makes us feel SPECIAL! bahahah
Also, what you deem as attempts to "goad" you into some sort of "flame war" are more like the gentle caress of the trade winds by DAC standards. Welcome aboard.

Yes...
Other than a few bad apples, it would seem that you are receiving a relatively warm welcome. I for one am glad you are willing to brave the storm to fraternise with your potential fans. Please forgive the imbeciles who know only how to speak from their posteriors.
Welcome Emil, my friend...
and may DaC's love embrace you.

FIGHT ME!
FIGHT ME!
I've seen something which sucks even more for fans of a different series. One of the developers of the Elite/Frontier series of computer games (you'll know his company better for versions of RollerCoaster Tycoon and Dog's Life) has promised a sequel to the game, Frontier: First Encounters, for about the same length of time between the release of Fallout 2 and the present day, about seven or eight years. Now, these fans aren't just devoted; they redefine devotion. This is a group of people who have been waiting eleven years since the last game was released. The first game in the Elite series was released in 1984, for godsakes, and there are people who reinvented that for the twenty-first century! As a matter of fact, its Usenet group is one of the longest continuously posted-in groups in existence. Call Fallout 3 vapourware? Not compared to this. Even Duke Nukem Forever is challenged by Elite 4.I also know it sucks that you've got the lead designer posting and he can't say a damn thing about the game. Unfortunately, there's nothing I can do about that. Otherwise, you'll probably find me pretty accessible and accomodating.
You see, these people, in general, wouldn't be satisfied with a rehashing of the concept dealt with in the third game in the series, even though they still play it. These people want the best game ever made. That's got to be hard on the developer.
I find it quite interesting to compare the two series, especially as the lead designer on both of them has spoken to the fans of the series. On one hand, you have a very hostile group which has been ignored over the last number of years; on the other hand, you have a group of people who want the prospective game to redefine the genre - again. Both very difficult for the developers to deal with.
"When conversing about oligarchy, you must consider this point: Many children are taught from an early age that monarchies are primarily benevolent, and are given very little to discourage this opinion until at least adolesence. Even more prevalent are stories about the supposed benevolence of heirs to the throne, symbolising a cycle which they are taught is good."

Hell, if you ask me Van Buren was pretty much pushing it. It's a question about preservation; preserving an idea is a pretty vague quest with no set standards about how to fill it. Going against established canon events and the like is probably the biggest offence, but the whole experience and idea is tied together by gameplay concepts; they're like the strongest part of the construction, on which everything else relies.Bethsoft_Emil wrote:"If it's not Van Buren, it's not Fallout 3."
If Oblivion is an example of what we might expect out of FO3, then disappointment is natural -- Oblivion is pretty far from Fallout, I doubt anyone would disagree with me on that. If we should turn our eyes away from Oblivion, fine, good, you have some other plans in mind; probably not, y'know, by the book as they say. That's fine too, if you're dealing with an ip of your own.
In this case the only good result can come from mimicking, and I say good result with the product in mind -- the continuation of an established two part series. It's all about reading scripts, taking down dates and asking yourself "What would the Fallout team do?", and that's probably boring; no self exploration, no finding your own style, no room to breathe -- it's, simply put, translation. What most often happens is, well y'know, building Jerusalem on England's green and pleasant soil.

The real question here is why Emil, clearly an Irish druid, has the name of an ancient noble family from Italy?
And from all places in the net, saying that what people here, at DAC, want is Van Buren is really hillarious
I guess you need time to understand the different groups and different stands regarding Fallout3 that Fallout fans in general and in particular in the fansites have. I'm sure a few oldschool guys will make you a list of groups, grievances, hopes and historical events that lead us, fallout fans, to the place we are today, and with the different views we have.
Difference is the keyword here, we're different from many other communities, and we are very different among ourselves, it takes time to get into our idiosyncrasies but that might be more productive than what you expect.
In Van Buren i followed the game very closely, helped the creation of bridges between the devs and the community, came up with every bit of info it was humanly possible to get, had a lot of fun working with Odin from NMA and conspiring with Killzig, meet people like Teatime or who now is called Ben Sisko, stay in touch through messenger, icq, mail and in the dark corners of IRC with devs that i started menacing with force and ended up finding close ties, a few are even my friends now.
And the enthusiasm and hope that i would find in many fans, all over the net, made it worthwhile, as getting people to criticise or support the game in depth, helping our community to become, in your words Emil:
Now others will lead the way, and if you can accept fallout fans as how they are and work from there without much cynicism involved, then I wish you good luck, even if we will be probably be in different sides in a near future.

Seriously, though, you guys are awesome. In the few months I've been visiting these forums I've seen more spirited, passionate, intelligent game design discussion than I have on a lot of other game forums in the past few years.
Now others will lead the way, and if you can accept fallout fans as how they are and work from there without much cynicism involved, then I wish you good luck, even if we will be probably be in different sides in a near future.
i don't get it. can you say anything at all about the game? i thought some stuff was already well established, like the lack of turn based combat? are you at least skimming the oh-so-informative fallout 3 forum here?

I was pretty sure that everything (except possibly that PC Gamer article) was just conjecture at this point?atoga wrote:i don't get it. can you say anything at all about the game? i thought some stuff was already well established, like the lack of turn based combat? are you at least skimming the oh-so-informative fallout 3 forum here?

As long as time, entropy, and the gravitational pull of competing heavenly bodies does not impede her patented 'lift and separation'.
Please suspend your disbelief, suppose marketing pressures allow a special dispensation on the kosher laws of mixing IP's, allow the mixing of metaphorical icons, allow the mixing of milk and (Dog) Meat on the same plate.
Consider one of the darker traditions of FO. Pop cultural references that can even transcend delusions of Monty Python. Even John Cleese in drag.
Consider Lara Croft abilities and aspirations as another pop cultural reference straddling the twin peaks of pleasing or p-ssing off the play-ahs.
Where 'guns akimbo' ends 'breasts akimbo' begins. Win - win, for a warm / fuzzy and squeezable soft -- SHOCK AND AWE!
Now, any munchkin that has lusted for the god like power and the glory of dual wielding 'pi-stoles' has had to confront the real world gun aficionado's bitch slap about accuracy.
If the Sky Father says NO, then every munchkin knows to go ask the Earth Mother.
Maybe those twin domes do not conceal guidance control radar or enhanced auxiliary synapses, but perhaps the mammary mass can double as shock absorbing modules!
Some sci fi fans enthusiasm might sag here, but some 'play-ahs' F = MA might go logarithmic. Escape trajectory perhaps.

The good news, your physical endowments allow for (Fast Shot) rapid and accurate (aimed) fire when dual wielding (designer) matched hand guns, after your nail polish has dried.
The bad news, your physical endowments prohibit the effective wearing of body armor until they are tailored to accommodate your twin 45's over the shoulder boulder holders. It takes 2 or more suits to couture one ensemble to 'bustier' your armor rating.
You are a sucker for a good back rub and manipulate your unique upper body dynamics to the max by weekly visits to any massage parlor where you happily pay double for chiropractic prestidigitation that looks an a lot like henati pan gender bondage.
The real bitch is, ... if you want to hang like Lara ... that you guys got to grow tits too.
