Killzig -- nope, definitely NOT a LARPer. Just a collector. I like to keep my reality and my fantasy respectfully separate.

that arm in Bloodlines was like the best melee weapon evar

talking of stealth kills, the axe kills was great, and tossing the victim with the great hook is just unsurpassed.

Welcome, Emil.

I found the Dark Brotherhood elements to be unusually enjoyable in an otherwise disappointing game... It was clear there was a different mood behind them.

It was the only part which succeeded in reminding me of Morrowind, which I have a greater respect for... Oblivion's endless happy HDR-glowing folk with badly written dialogue were such a pain after the cynical, harsh and more realistic atmosphere provided by the Dunmer back in Elder Scrolls III.

From first mentions and meetings with the Brotherhood, there was a rougher, darker and more detailed atmosphere present which felt far more real than any other portion of Oblivion. If that was your work, well done.

I look forward to seeing what you do with my favourite game series.

If you're mortally wounded by, say, a herring or toothbrush, do pass on your job to me..

Emil, how much are you, as a daveloper, looking at that what the community says?
Is it important to you? Is there any influence on your works when you see hordes of fans raging in forums about RT vs TB, 2D vs 7D ;) , isometric view vs. FP view. etc... ?

I think giving the people the feeling that what they say may change Fallout 3 somehow, would be a great gift to the people.

Someone should make a Fallout Fan post-generator program.

Maybe I just ignore too many people and what they say. I'll follow your advice and read more stuff posted by others, even if they're dickheads.

Where was that Josh quote about FO3 from Brios?

I've ordered both NWN2 and Gothic3, will have a go at them both when they arrive. Haven't been following Josh, MCA et al really so don't know what they're saying about Fallout these days.
As for Emil, his credentials are pretty good in my book - is it true Emil, that you worked on the Life of the Party Thief mission? - so I repeat what I've been saying for a while now, I'm keeping an open mind about FO3 :P

By the way, Emil, could you maybe concisely tell us about the stuff that you are allowed to (I mean, some info has already been released, hasn't there? :? )

edit: @Teatime: Gothic III has it's downs and ups. Like in the previous games, it has a solid, awesome story, but combat is now really village (yes, even more than ever) and some stuff just plainly pisses me off (random chest content, like in ES).

Some quick answers to a few questions:

Dreadnought -- Well, simplest answer I can give is this: If I didn't care what the community thought, I wouldn't be here. That said, when you make any game, you have to take all the fan suggestions and determine what's important, what's not, what's doable, what's not. We have a vision of the game we want to make, and that's the one we're making; staying true to the "essence" of Fallout (which can be defined a thousand ways, I know) is incredibly important to us.

When someone communicates articulately and politely, I'm obviously much more likely to listen. When someone starts spewing vitriol, well, it's hard for me to take anyone like that seriously. But, putting myself in your shoes -- it's your right to bitch. Passion breeds passionate discourse. I'd much rather work on a game that people love and debate than one that no one gives a damn about.

Some of you guys love Oblivion. Some of you hate it. That's fine. Again, welcome to the Internets. The last bastion of free speech, and I wouldn't have it any other way. But I do want people to know that, whatever your feelings on Oblivion, The Fallout 3 team is well aware that Fallout is not Oblivion. We didn't acquire the license just to simply throw a post-apocalyptic skin on our fantasy game. Hell, that's why we released our construction set -- so you guys can do that for us. :)

Mr. Teatime -- Yep, Life of the Party was my baby. I lived and breathed that level for months; good times. Little trivia -- when we did the Thief 2 demo, "Precious Cargo," the rooftops were even more expansive. But they had to be pared down for the full game, because once the Mechanist tower was fleshed out, the whole thing was just too enormous to run. Honestly, I prefer the rooftops from the demo (and I've heard others say the same thing).

Frater Perdurabo -- Honestly, I would if I could. But I'm really not at liberty to say anything. I'm not going to confirm or deny anything.

I think passion hit the nail on the head, for Fallout...

Wherever I've gone on the net, wherever I've found anyone with an interest in quality gaming over the last five or more years, I've never ceased to find quiet individuals who will burst into gleeful ranting about just how good Fallout is :?

The atmosphere, the style and the entertainment value of the Fallout games inspires.. Passion. Often quite violent and perverted passion, but passion all the same. You'll find the hardcore fans in any community, but I don't think I've ever met a Fallout fan who could be described as anything less than hardcore.

People either love or hate Fallout, and most of them love it. I don't find people who just 'quite liked it', ever..

With credentials like Thief, and the stealth/assassination elements of Oblivion, I daresay you stand to give Fallout the one thing it was always missing, a sense of free movement and expression.

Simply being able to move in three dimensions in a fallout game, to climb atop a rocky outcrop with a hunting rifle as one ambushes a trader caravan or creep across a corrugated iron rooftop in a small frontier village.. Heaven! X.x

You give a lot of jaded old fans hope. Good luck, and don't fuck it up :drunk:

Emil,

I have been faithfully reading your posts (in the hope that you slip and drop something juicy) and have found about 85% of what you say very reassuring so thanks for indulging us.

I personally really enjoyed oblivion (the whole game) but i m glad you not 'simply throw[ing] a post-apocalyptic skin on our fantasy game.' based on your record i have high hopes... well higher than they were a month ago. keep up the good work.

PS. The doctors gave me another 6 months to live… my last wish is to play F3… no pressure though... I m joking... or am i?

"welcome" glow worm. actually, I've found most of what he's had to say semi-reassuring. I'm still worried about the daggers and assorted fantasy doodads plus the lack of background with the dialog/npc interaction on that front. :anger:

overall though, he doesn't seem like a Chuck Cuevas style douche bag so we should see if he enjoys chocolate and send him some sort of assorted box of goodies. <3

I can assure Emil here that at least I will be moderately satisfied, not less, with Fallout 3 as long as it is completely cleansed of everything fantasy such as the words "alas" and "realm", which no one not touched in the head actually uses. Other abominations worth mentioning are the concept of 'noble kings' who see messiahses in their dreams and elements which EVERY FUCKING FANTASY GAME, BOOK OR FILM the last centuries has had such as elves, dwarves and goblins. They are if not more ever since then equally as detestable as they were in the Lord of the Rings etc. and should be shot on sight. I do not expect to see dwarves in Fallout 3, so what I am getting at here is the very trace of them. Not even the tone of "greedy bastard aren't you! I like that in a thief" or "the Argonians SWIM in it". I am not trying to suggest that Oblivion sucked, but please forget that you even made it while making Fallout 3. Doing otherwise would be the worst thing you could do. It should be said however that I was just as pleased with the Dark Brotherhood campaign as everyone else here, and the way you speak of preserving the Fallout atmosphere is quite convincing and so reassuring. But anyway: While I understand that the outlook for a turn-based, isometric Fallout 3 is quite grim, dialogue even remotely reminiscent of Oblivion's is going to prompt me to without hesitation summon unpleasant demons to put sand in your shoes or possibly worse. Even the dialogue engine, if you understand what I am saying, must be done away with. NO clicking on "Rumors".

You have been warned. :)
