WTF STALKER still around

Post by Mr. Teatime »

[ Game -> Preview ] - More info on Game: S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadows of Chernobyl

Apparently so. Gamespot have done some hands-on impressions of STALKER, which I thought was established to be vaporware 8 years ago.

As we played through the level for the first time, we found ourselves
dying quite frequently, with the opposition cutting through us when we
were out in open positions. However, once we began to push the military
forces back, the stalker allies moved forward and became more
aggressive. Moving away from the area, we could see the A-Life
technology in action as a military helicopter flew in to replenish the
armed forces in the area. Shortly afterward, a THQ representative
demonstrated to us that with a little exploration, you can avoid the
fire fight altogether and find the underground opening that would have
been revealed if you had extracted the allied leader.

...

While S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is big on ideas, it currently looks a little dated
when compared to its next-generation contemporaries. The protracted
development period has clearly been used to polish the A-Life system
and branching storyline, and you have to scratch beneath the surface to
see these advancements. Thankfully, the game finally looks close to
completion, and THQ seems relatively certain that it will see the light
of day next year. While S.T.A.L.K.E.R. has more bad endings waiting for
its players than it does good, hopefully the game itself will have a
happy conclusion after all those years of work.

If it gets released, I am predicting a horrible buggy mess with ambitions far higher than the implentation. I'm also happy to be proved wrong in this case.

Spotted @ Evil Avatar

They removed mandatory eating and drinking, they removed non-linear exploration and they removed vehicles. It's now a user-friendly straight up FPS with a few 'RPG gimmicks' like a slot based inventory.

(A brief summary of all the changes, as gathered from the last six months fo articles on the game)

They should just turn it into a RTS and be done with it.

I don't care what other people think, I want the game. It sounds pretty cool anyway u put it unless u want to start comparing what it used to be to what it is now.

I saw a bit of the preview on MTV's GAMER WEEK. Looks awful but I'll still give it a whirl to check out some of that post-nuke goodness.
The answer to your first question is shaddup.

I can understand removing the vehicles, eating, sleeping and other worthless stuff, but what first got me interested about STALKER was the massive, unique and radiated non-linear environment that seemed perfect for stalking and observing weird things and perhaps getting into a gun fight every now and then. That should have been the beef of the game. Too bad it got screwed up by incompetent developers(it can't be THQ's fault since they still seem to pump money into the project).

Is it really that fucked up?
Like the US Rust Belt, but it is like that everywhere?

During the Cold War Poland had actual Marines.

I figure if they could afford that, then after the fall of the Iron Curtain, Poland would have been able to unfuck itself.

By Rust Belt, I mean the "Dead Factory Zone" concept popular in cyberpunk SF.
Not the fancy new US "redeveloped industry" thing.

(notice the years '76-'79 in this first link - this might give you an idea about how much the communists fucked up our economy. Now you see how they could afford things despite inefficient economy? The first sentence in the report is also quite.. informative..)
