COH: Opposing Fronts

Post by Dogmeatlives »

Anyone who has played COH knows how incredible it is. The AI is like nothing ever seen before in strategy, the combat is fast-paced, tactical, and a shitload of fun, and now it has recently been announced that an expansion/sequel is in the works with plans for a Q4 release.

"Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts is the next chapter in the critically acclaimed Company of Heroes series. Players take command of the German Panzer Elite as they struggle against the might of Operation Market Garden, or lead the British 2nd Army in the vicious battle for Caen, France. The standalone title features two unique armies with full length campaigns, new multiplayer modes, Microsoft DirectX 10 support, mission persistence, improved vehicle and soldier AI, enhanced physics, and a dynamic weather system. Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts is fully compatible with Company of Heroes, allowing players to wage war with four unique armies."

Those are the only two screenshots so far. I'll update this thread as more info is released but right now I'm sleepy. I can't wait to play as the Brits! Commandos bitches!

I don't really know what you're talking about, the AI was nothing special nor was it very tactical, but it was a fun game.

Well whatever, the game is awesome is my point. It would be awesome if you could create a squad that could hijack enemy's vehicles in the expansion.

i thought it injected some serious energy into the genre. the flow of combat is just far different from any other rts out there. the unit control and AI made everything else seem silly in comparison. this will be most bueno

I feel the same way. After playing COH, for me the days of controlling lifeless units was over. When you compare it to Age of Empires or Warcraft, they just seem goofy. In what other game do you have units running for cover behind a wall without you having to move them yourself. I definitely think it had an incredible amount of tactics. Just try taking out a Panzer with a Sherman.

You have to outmaneuver the Panzer and get to its rear in order to do any real damage. Compare that to many other rts's in which one unit is stronger than the other and it just becomes unit hp vs. unit hp. In COH a squad of riflemen could take out a Panzer with enough sticky bombs and maybe an enemy panzerschreck.

There's no German campaign, but you can play as the Germans in vs.

If their doctrines are used effectively, they can be really badass. I still suck playing as Germans. I tend to stick to the U.S. with the airborne doctrine.

well... how many games have had a german campaign for ww2? its really quite brave, i think, its not something thats really done often.

back when i heard this game was being developed i thought, "oh, ok, another ww2 rts", but then noticed it was being developed by relic, and became an avid follower. is there really a developer out there better suited to making great strategy games than relic? they did a tremendous job with this, im eagerly awaiting the expansion

I enjoy Relic's take on RTS. I think that it says something about how messed up our priorities are if people are afraid to show the Nazis' experience during WW2. It wasn't a Hitler clone army. They were young men that fought for their country and while they were misguided, their stories still deserve to be told, if for no other reason than for the global impact that the Nazi regime had.

Just started playing COH... it's great. Much, much, much better than DoW.

Very innovative gameplay, and it looks killer.

Snipers are a bit gay though. Too powerful.

i thought that at first, however snipers are really pretty easy to defeat. when a squad takes a hit from one, immediately charge their position, dont try to run away, youll only take more hits when you turn your back. if you charge his position he cant keep camouflaging himself and from up close he wont last more than a few seconds.

edit: if hes in a building this doesnt really always work, and the best bet is to throw in grenades or satchel charges. a flamethrower is even better, but armor is obviously best

i love the realistic way that infantry behave. if they get shelled they dive for cover and crawl around trying to find the lowest possible position, or alternatively roll around the ground with their head in their hands screaming. in combat they react intelligently to threats and find cover. im absolutely crazy about the little movement system that shows a colored dot representing the prospective position and cover quality of each squad member when youre telling them to move. the suppression system is really a pretty incredible innovation too, because it really really shows the usefulness of machine guns and the insanity of charging one directly. the little medic system and recovery of incapacitated men on the battlefield is just icing on the cake.

the ability to lay out light defenses like barbed wire and sand bags as well as establish a forward barracks is something i really like too. i love turning a farmhouse into a fort. oh man, i love it.

terrain deformation is pretty cool too, since elevations and cover play a huge role in combat.

edit x2: the obscene language also makes me giggle. i like how when i select a unit of american paratroopers when theyre engaged in a firefight, the query of the NCO, which is usually "yes sir?" becomes, "im a little fuckin busy here!"
