Electric Guitar

Post by Smiley »

Well 've decided to just go for it instead of thinking about it. I want to buy an electrical guitar, and learn how to play it.

Question is, what do I need to keep an eye out, when I buy my first guitar?
I don't know which style I want to play, because I really like both blues and rock...

Here are some examples on a bunch of guitars, which I have no idea, if any of them are good or not.

Regarding Amp, I was thinking if I could just use the amplifier connected to my surround set instead?

fender strat fo lyfe, huh
yamaha amps are supposed to be gut?

also you'll need to practice >1hr per day and have fingers of steel

I dunno, maybe boywoos and others can help, I think a good guitar costs at least 500euros or so, though.

Get a cheap Fender strat knockoff with a cheap 15W modeling amp to try out different kinds of sounds - like so: http://www.behringer.com/GUITAR-PACK/index.cfm?lang=ENG

I quit playing guitar about 1.5 years ago but when I started this is similar to what I got. Fairly cheap stuff but since it's going to take a while before the equipment will be the limiting factor rather than your own suckiness, this is what I'd recommend. Also, get a friend to teach you; in my experience that's much, much more effective than books, websites or DVD's.

Was thinking of taking some evening lessons. Don't know anyone who plays, that's why I'm asking here for advice. Despite the general attitude, people here do come with good ideas once in a while ;D

Taking lessons is second to a good friend. Maybe you'll get to know someone there who will help you out for a few beers or whatever, so that's a good idea.

CDs and manuals are indeed shit to learn from, it's also bad if you are kind of lazy and don't like numb hurting fingers.

Lessons are nice if you want to learn fundamentals and how to read.

"Tabs" or tablature are a quick way for "musically illeterate" people to learn popular songs easily. You can play anything given practice, but have no understanding of the technique behind it.

A combination of both is probably best until you can play by ear. You will need to know scales and tunings in order. Once you know scales and some basic blues techniques you're on your way.

Basic blues stuff is a great start as all guitar music (save probably Flamenco/Spanish Classical) is based off it.

I would buy a cheap guitar first, like an Epiphone (it's a Gibson made from inferior materials and much cheaper). Jumping right to a Strat would be a waste.

Yeah, buy a cheap guitar. You don't know how to play it, anyway. Good luck if you're going to learn it by yourself.

Exactly. Also, is this just a casual interest, or is this a step towards something... BIGGER!

Well, seems I have to scrap it until a few months later...
My fridge/freezer just died.

Got to buy that instead if I want food and cold beverages....

Money: Depends on what I need. Do I need the kind of amp you see with electric guitars, or can I use my Sony STR DE 598?

If I can use that, I guess around 500€ on the guitar itself.

As for interests, I'm pretty good at picking things up, but I loose interest after a while. But I hope this is different, since it's something I've always wanted to do. When I was a kid, I took lessons, but the team closed down for some reason =(

Buy some cheap ass second hand guitar. If you think you'll be interested and will continue for a while, invest into a proper one, like a Gibson, or maybe a Warrior / Zion ;D

Can you read sheet music? If not you're a fuckwit musician who shouldn't make sounds. If you can, I wish you good luck on your journey down the path of musicianship. Guitars are alright, I guess. But if you're going to be playing by yourself pick up something a bit more classical, a trumpet, a sax, or a clarinet.

My sister got that for her birthday last year.
Only cost 200 Canadian though.

Was it worth buying? Fender = Quality. But cheap = fail. So yeah. Dunno, maybe my existential illusions cause me to believe that it might be some kind of dodgy guitar/amp, totaly not worth spending moneez on it.
