Game Daily Claims SPECIAL and Old Characters Returning

Post by King of Creation »

<strong>[ Game -> Update ]</strong> - More info on <a href="#Fallout 3">Game: Fallout 3</a>

<p>In <a target="_self" href="http://www.gamedaily.com/fallout-3/pc/g ... 2791">this article</a> at Game Daily, author <strong>Greg Atkinson</strong> claims that two things have been confirmed about Bethesda's <em>Fallout 3</em>: <strong>SPECIAL will return, and previous characters from the series will make appearances</strong>. In <a href="http://www.duckandcover.cx/forums/viewtopic.php?t=10632" target="_self">DAC's interview with Todd Howard back in 2005</a>, we confirmed that Bethesda would be using SPECIAL:</p><blockquote><p><em><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>Will you be using the SPECIAL system in Fallout 3?</strong>

</strong></strong></strong></strong></strong></strong>Yes, we have rights to it and plan on using it. </em>
</p></blockquote><p>Atkinson doesn't offer any citations or proof for the other claim, but it may still be the case as Bethesda has recently shown a penchant for revealing much more to "main stream" sites and mags.</p><blockquote><p><em>The two most major and confirmed announcements about the game were a
relief. Fallout 3 will continue to use the series' SPECIAL (i.e.
Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, and
Luck) character attribute system. We guess the system will contain a
few small modifications, but the main character system will be in
place. Secondly, characters from previous games will make return
appearances; they would need to travel from Southern California (the
setting for the first two games) to Washington, D.C., the major
metropolitan area in the game. This change seems like a good move for
Bethesda since it will help keep the game fresh and allow the
development team to create a new history for the series (and cheap
assets since the developer is located a few miles from the D.C. border).</em></p></blockquote><p>I guess we'll have to wait until <a target="_self" href="http://www.duckandcover.cx/forums/viewt ... rt=0">next week's press event</a> to learn more.

(and cheap assets since the developer is located a few miles from the D.C. border).
ehehe...

Other than that, Todd already said something on the DaC-interview, that they are planning to use Special, so i`d say its pretty much confirmed. :chew: This also means, i know what informations Game Informer will have, pretty much the same.

Well, the only good thing about Tactics that could return is R. Lee Ermey.

why must they insist on the return of old characters? why must they insist on including the brotherhood? the game is taking place on the other side of the country. guess what? america is a huge country. this is something i would have been excited about when i was thirteen, but now its just silly. is todd howard a child? if you want to use old plot devices just make it take place in the old setting, but dont throw them in an inappropriate setting just to try and validate the fact that its supposed to be a fallout title

neato on special though

You're right...I had forgotten about that. I've updated the newspost to reflect it.

Lame.

Possibly Cassidy would finally go wandering.

Maybe that narcoleptic walkabout ghoul.

But really, it's just stupid.

SPECIAL? Does it even matter? Any system will do.
It's just a way to do skill checks, some dialogue options, and some other shizzle.

What? No d20?? I thought they got rid of GCG for a reason...

It's only Harold. Still, let us hope there will be the Lynette-Harold secret lovechild NCP. Played by Liam Neeson, our father.

Edit: Has Beth revealed how many years will have passed since FO2 ended?
There are no 'knowns'. There are thing we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say there are things that we now know we don't know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don't know we don't know. So when we do the best we can and we pull all this information together, and we then say well that's basically what we see as the situation, that is really only the known knowns and the known unknowns. And each year, we discover a few more of those unknown unknowns.

Regarding SPECIAL...

SPECIAL pleased me because it provided a more realistic set of attributes than most RPGs, and the general system of Fallout particularly appealed because of it's lack of restrictions. Being unable to even hold a sword in my hand because I happen to be trained in magic has never ceased to make my blood boil.. Yet in Fallout, though you'd likely be inept at aiming the thing, you could use a chaingun from the moment the game begins.

The Elder Scrolls is possibly the only other RPG I've encountered in which you're free to do what you please. Whatever can be said for the quality of Morrowind or Oblivion, they did freedom well and never placed restrictions upon the player...

I think Bethesda's attitude combined with the sheer wonderfulness of the SPECIAL system could work rather nicely :chick:

On returning characters:

Come, you fools.. What would Fallout 3 be without Harold?

Ya, SPECIAL on consoles, can't fucking wait to see how great and next-gen that will be.

I hope Harold returns, though.

Why Harold? Wasn't he old-as-a-fucking-tree-and-tortoise-hybrid during FO2? And why would he leave Gecko?

Marcus, anyone?
