They're all fat, middle-aged guys at Gamespy, so I get them confuddled easily. Is that you Delsyn? Is Bethesda sunk, in your eyes, at this point?
Incidentally, this is Patrick Joynt from the podcast.
Anyhow, to answer your question: No, it's not sunk. BethSoft is doing quite a few things right and they certainly have a lot of enthusiasm. Some of the concepts, like radiation, PIPBoy radio and weapon/item jury-rigging, are great. Others, like VATS and the GOAT chargen process, have potential but remain unproven, and given Bethesda's previously-broken promises in regards to Oblivion I would be skeptical. Isometric view? Data seems sketchy so far and I'm inclined to think it won't really work out.
The things that seem, at first glance, to suck are the Doom-like mutant models, the resurrection of the greatly-reviled level-scaling system (even Oblivion fans hated it!) and the first-person perspective, which I'm not personally keen on (I guess I'm European then?). I also refuse - on past evidence - to believe Bethesda will craft dialogue and a story worthy of the series. Honestly, the dialogue (and speech interaction) in the Elder Scrolls series has been fucking 'orrible. If they can overcome these last two shortfalls this may be a good game. I don't think it's going to be a masterpiece of the calibre of Fallout or Planescape: Torment though.
