Defending woods full of squirrels and reindeer :salute:
PiP wrote:the Finnish army also uses (used) a redesigned AK74. Coincidence?! :gnasher:
Apparently, yeah. STALKER for the win, eh? I learned to defend my country by playing videogames.
Mechanurgist wrote:They let you on the internets when you're in the army? Ho-ho.
Yeah, we've got free time in the evenings for most of the time and access to internet as well. And almost all weekends we're allowed to spend home, so, yeah. Ho-ho indeed.
King of Creation wrote:Kash...what happened to going to University? Didn't you just get accepted and now you're going off to join the military?

I was ordered to enter military service around 8 months ago, but university studies were still uncertain. I found out that I got in, but I requested postponemend, so I can begin my academic studies in 2008.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm pretty damn excited. I'm supposed to be in the city of Kajaani, at the
gates of the Kainuu Brigade by 1800 tomorrow, Monday the 9th. And from
that point onward the FDF owns my ass for almost a whole year.

I've taken serious precautions, based on the stuff my friends have told me
about the army life. First of all I've orientated my thinking towards bi-
sexuality, since "if it's called completely gay in the civilian life, it's team
spirit in the army", and secondly I've exercised turning off my brain and
just doing what ever I'm told to do.

I hope I'll get a nice squad, not a bunch of redneck skinheads or shit. I'm
not even sure where I'll be situated, because the recruiting officer had to
put me somewhere and told me: "Well, let's sign you up in the infantry."
So I guess I'll be heading to the Kainuu Jaeger Battalion, not sure how
long I'll be there, though.

I can only wish I won't end up drawing cable in the Signal Battalion - a
friend told me it was incredibly boring and stupid, climbing up in trees
installing antennas and carrying a reel of phone cable on your back
through hard terrain, crawling for most of the time. Bleh. We'll see.

I'll be back with some updated info in about two weeks or so. Stay tuned
or something, lulz.

The Economist says you guys are gonna be in NATO real soon now, along with the Swedes.

Well Swedes have always taken cover behind us, the "bumper zone" between them and Russia. They'll stay neutral as long as humanely possible. I doubt we'll be joining in the close future either, since that'd fuck our relations with Russia. The public opinion is also oriented towards neutrality and/or European defence. I don't know.

Festung Europa! You have sufficient amounts of land-mines to stop a large scale infantry assault.
The rest you leave to the germans.

More of a Speed Bump Zone, really. Or did you mean 'buffer zone'? :giggle:

I kid. At least you're not Poland: the place people travel through when they're in a hurry to get somewhere or invade someone. Poles should just disband their army and set up invasion toll booths.
Death: "Only one man can kill this many Russians. Bring his guitar to me!"

Not for long. The wankers signed the Ottawa treaty that bans anti-infantry landmines. :chew: I don't really understand how we're supposed to guard a borderline so long without land mines. I guess if the whole population (5.2 mil) stood in one line at the 1300 km long border, we could have, um.. 4 people per every meter? 2 adults, 1 elderly and 1 kid, maybe? The post-modern Finnish assault unit? Hi-tech & hi-five

Assault Penguins?

Cyberize them and arm with suicide bombs and amphetamine/PCP auto- injectors for turbo speed-run into enemy concentrations.

They can hibernate in spider holes along the border.

Or just put mines on miniature ATVs and equip with chameleonic cloak.

Or:

Add a whole new decentralized man-portable backup military.

100,000 Personal Antiaircraft missiles
100,000 Personal Antitank guided missiles
50,000,000 RPGs (one third thermobaric) with automatic launchers giving an individual person an RPG fire-rate of one per second.
100,000 12.7mm or 14.5 mm AMAT/Sniper rifles with mega scopes
100,000 20mm or 23mm AMAT/sniper rifles as above
5,000 Predator Drones (or similar)
100,000 anti-helicopter mines
Various devices for cloud-seeding (make snow/etc.), smoke generators capable of fogging up huge areas, chaff/smart chaff rockets for creating radar-free zones (enough to fill the sky continuously for months/years- use parachutes/balloons fueled with thermite to dispense/hang in the air for a long time.)
All sorts of decoy transmitters, scarecrows, inflatable tanks, etc.
Plus millions of little sensors, especially sonar.
Plus tens of thousands of assorted robots. (many would be auto turrets for the above weapons)

Keep all that shit in EMP-shielded containers.

Stash enough food for a few years, and so on.

I estimate that with associated costs added in, this would cost $4000-$8000 USD per capita to set up over a 10 year period.

Festung Finland.

edit: maybe throw in attack-buses (miniature cruise missiles) and GPS-in-flight-correction artillery shells (substitute rocket for propellant to negate need for an artillery piece. One guy could drag these around on a sled.) Just add another $100 a year per capita.
