Football in America was originally played with a round ball and most points were Field Goals- done by kicking the ball between the posts.

The evolution of the game saw more emphasis on "the running game", which involved throwing, catching, and running with the ball to score a touchdown.

The ball was changed to go along with this.

That's why an American football has that oval shape. ("prolate spheroid")
