tried vista yet?
i bought vista along with my new rig, since oem edition is so much cheaper, and i was pleasantly surprised. have you tried it yet? what do you think?
Ive seen pics of vista , it looks great but from what I understand only a few million people(if that) have purchased it and mostly people seem to be downgrading to win 98 and such for performance reasons.
I really would love to run vista but it's a hog, every version of windows that comes out gets worse and worse. to be perfectly honest I think most people would rather just run win 98 or maybe xp and just get a different desktop shell to make it look nicer.
I'll get vista when someone buys me a copy and gives me a monster comp to run it.

Ghoul aint so bad when you dip a chip in its shoulder
I've been using vista since before it was officially released (through quasi official channels, even) and it runs no slower than XP ever does. It even keeps from bogging down for longer.
I enjoy it very much, going back to XP would significantly hamper my productivity.
The only real problem I have is a few compatibility issues, with games especially. They are nearly never totally shot though, with the exception of Darwinia, which has had a vista specific patch released so it's a non-issue.

it runs pretty fast for me too, but i have'nt tried XP on this computer, so i can't really compare. it does use a lot of RAM, but i guess that's just because it loads my frequently used programs into any unused memory. my bf has a laptop with just 512MB, and it runs just fine, i don't know how.
i've had no compatibility problems with applications except for one slight problem with oblivious (when i exit the game, vista tells me an error occured and the game had to close :wtf:).
i was quite impressed the first time i booted it up and found that allmost all my drivers had been installed automatically, behind the scenes. i had to disable all the new security stuff, though, it was just too dang annoying. i love the new games explorer, and it found all my games except for stalker.
i would still use win 98 if it was practical, though. allthough performance is great, i just know that games and heavy applications would run faster if windows was slimmer. unfortunately, microsoft expects gamers to just buy an xbox, and so they don't care that much about performance on the computer as long as it looks good.

I havn't read through the thread but my experience with visto so far is that:
I tried a brand new laptop with vista on board (just windows bootup, some solitaire and wordpad - showing an old pal how to use the thing)
- it ran like shite. I thought windows took as long to start as if it were a 600MHz machnie with Win XP and a big messy registry. And this system didn't even have office installed, no applications games no nothing. Something elese annoyed me too during the try-out but can't remember what.
So all in all, I thought 'great, just another 'gotta buy new windawz gotta buy new powerful rig deal' for everyone who's forced to play with DX10

Bot livesearch and get a free vista ultimate... soon.POOPERSCOOPER wrote:I don't see the benefit of buying now either as most of the stuff I don't need except maybe DX10 but I won't need that for quite awhile. I might get it when I get a new box but that will probably be awhile off.
Prove me wrong maybe?
Problem solved.
