My apologies for the long story. If you cba to read it, you're not missing out on much.
If you do, and have something to add, please do.


Ze ex, has been trying to get more friends after the breakup, which is healthy since she barely has any, and is hopelessly socially addicted. And an attention whore(but not consciously).

So she chats a lot, gets to know people online as well as at her study.

She finds a nice guy on a chat site, talks a lot back and forth, contnuing on to MSN and later via cellphone SMS..

The guy is fairly eager, and seems like he has a mild case of ADD.
He introduces another friend, who's the "sane" one.
He literally describes him, as his sane counterweight.


If you haven't noticed this is a scam by now, you're naive.
My ex certainly is, and is, like I said, an attentionwhore.


So anyway, a few days passes and the ADD-guy wants her to be his girlfriend. He wants pictures, wants to see her on webcam, and such.
Later on he asks for nudes.

She refuses all of it.

So the sane guy writes her, and advises her to "do what he says and wants", if he wants nudes, webcam sex or phonesex, she should do it.
Not because the ADD-guy is malevolant, but just curious and a bit crazy.
If not, he's a danger to himself and the people around him.

She still refuses, and receives an SMS the next day that ADD-guy has slit his wrists and is at the hospital.


If you believe this could be true, you're just as naive as my ex.
But they are pretty convincing, from what I've read.


So she's shocked, and doesn't know what to do. She seeks comfort, at looks me up. I spend half a minute reading these text messages, and easily conclude that this is pretty far out, or at least not something she should worry about. If some guy *DID* slit his wrists, it's probably not because of her, but for whatever other reasons he's had.

Then another sms pops up, from the sane guy, the "do what he says and wants" text, followed up by a "this wasn't for you"

So it's pretty evident now, that this guy is sending out these messages to several people.

I try to phone the number, and after 3 hangups, he writes me; "You've called. Who are you?"

I explain to him that he's been found out, and that he better have a good explanation or apology, otherwise I'm reporting him for blackmail, and reporting it to the newspapers(we have a couple that are countrywide and popular called B.T. and Ekstra Bladet. Tingel Tangel can describe them better I think. They love this kind of stuff.).

He replies, that he himself is a cop(strisser in danish). no one calls himself that, if he really is an officer.

So I write back, fair enough "officer" and his real name(which I got off the web). I'm reporting you to your local department, since I know where you live.

He writes back: "No problem, I'll just delete it and file a case against you."
I've just looked him up, he lives alone, and is apparently about 26-7'ish..
But has the brain of a twelve year old.

"Thanks for the evidence, "officer", you'll receive company from your colleagues today or tomorrow. Tell them I said "hi"."

Of course the cops didn't give a shit, when I called them. Even though they could've phoned him, and that would probably have made him crap his pants.


My ex, is at this point completely, and rightfully, ashamed of herself.

Then the threats begin. next day, in the evening, he writes her:

"Tell your friend he's receiving a visit soon."
He has my number, but there's no address linked to it. I've removed all connections previously.

"When Brian is done with your friend, I'm sending my boys after you and your family, you're done unless you do as you're told. The choice is yours." (Brian is the "tough" name here in DK. You'd normally associate him with either a smartass punk in his thumping bass car, or a bodybuilder)

Next morning:

"So what do you choose? Will you do as I say? or shall you and your
family die?"

This is the point where I'm considering to call the guys from where I used to work, at a warehouse, and go visit him.
Being a little prick, and terrorizing a person who's done nothing to him, with death threats is the last straw.
Thinking myself the tough guy, I can't even reach one of them...

So I look up if there's a penalty for death threats via SMS, and apparently there is, I call the cops.


"What's your choice? You better pick fast, when I give the order to them, they can't be recalled."

"I'll give you an hour to decide. If haven't heard from you by then, I'll send them off. And remember, once they're sent, they can't be called back."


Past this points I've reported everything, and my ex goes off to the station to file the case. They're checking him out.
My father, who I'm working with, is an ex-military consultant, and has ties to PET(danish intelligence agency). He calls his buddy, and asks him to push some buttons, to hurry the case up a bit.



Now.. for the title..

I'm a dumbass for even caring. I should've laughed my ex, right in the face and told her what a naive fool she was.
This would serve as a harsh reminder and put the point across.
Instead I comforted her, and assured her that she was naive and too trusting and all that bull, to make her feel better.

I'm even dumber, for calling the ass, because now he apparently has my number(even though it should be hidden). Otherwise he couldn't have SMS'd me.


But this guy.. is a complete retard.
Not only is he an obvious lier, he actually threatens me, by telling he's a cop. Instead of giving a half-assed excuse that would've left him off the hook.
He provides me evidence, that he's "corrupt", by deleting my file..
Is there no limit to stupidity!?

And then, he sends *death threats*. I don't know how things are dealth with in other contries, and how normal this is other places in the world..
But here, they take you serously if you receive death threats, and especially repeatedly. And something *will* be done about it.

What will happen? I might get the odd sms from him once in a while. My ex has moved to a different MSN, has gotten a new number and phone.


So that's my story. And I've learned from it: Don't give a shit.

Too shy of confrontation(other word for coward), and too personal. I'd rather not get tied to it, and have someone else do it. I like my record clean.


The story isn't done though, because the last of it happened today. He might actually react and do something, because my ex' number is linked to my address. To which, he'll face me and my neighbor. And then I'll have ample excuse to kick him down the stairs.

First of all: mate, your English is better than to stoop so low as to call BT and Ekstra Bladet "national newspapers" - they're soulless, populist tabloids, is what they are. And yes, they really DO love this sort of story.

Second of all:
The only idiot, I repeat: the -ONLY- idiot in this case, is the guy making death-threats and posing as an officer of the law.

Your ex is not an idiot, and I recent anyone making fun of this and her because of it - simply because I've been through what she has, for more than a year, an d it's amazing how powerless you all of a sudden get when you look down at your phone, one of your most trusted items, and it displays a deaththreat to you by someone you at one point maybe even cared for. Granted, her not seeing that it was a scam doesn't speak well for her level of intelligence, but please don't look down on her for panicking and contacting someone she trusts. Had I not had people around who could calm me down and explain the obvious to me, I think I might easily have been left in a state of passiveness and anxious waiting for my "death" - even though I concider myself a strong individuel. Same thing goes for a close friend of mine, who's had two different stalkers, on of them actually -really- sending people after her and trying to rape her at one time. Believe me, the situation renders you more helpless than you would think.

Therefore, you are in no way an idiot. You should never think you were an idiot because you took the time to calm her down and help her - never. In fact, you showed strength and awareness and a great persona to actually take this on yourself and calling the guy out, with the following hassel of "omg mofo, I'magonnakillyounow!" falling on you instead. I can only applaud that you helped her and called her out, even if you yourself think that it's stupid.

Lastly, the guys naturally is an idiot. A couple of years ago, when not -everyone- had a cell phone and scams were new and fresh it may have been more succesful, but it's just so damn easy to find someones phone-number, mail, adress and social security number online these days, even if you only have one of the above to go by. And frankly, posing as an officer of the law over a text message is just stupid. Doing death threats when you've been called on them is downright dumb - had he had any style, flair, or feel for his own 'game', he'd have said "fair enough, sorry to bother you" and went on to his next naive young woman.

So, in short (for those of you who didn't bother to read it all): You are not an idiot for helping someone in need - quite the contrary. She is not an idiot for being freaked out when someone she sort of trusts all of a sudden threatens her life. He is the only idiot in this thing, obviously not being very intelligent or he would have given up when called out and just moved on.
