The Office
It's back for season 4. Anyone still watching? The premiere wasn't bad, but wasn't great either.

Never really got into it. It's pretty funny but don't ever try to catch it. Always Sunny in Philadelphia is more my taste.
Wasteland Radio, with Charlie C.
i don't like to speak in absolutes, but every aspect of the american version is worse. the acting of the uk version is a lot more subtle, there's a great deal of tension in the antics of the boss and his assistant (for example) so the awkward moments feel genuinely drawn out & awkward, instead of the american version where it's always OMG LOL AWKWARD MOMENT HOW ZANY, rather typical of a sitcom i think.
and plus they added a full on romantic subplot to the to the american version, instead of in the british version where they were mostly content to allude to it rather than wasting five minutes of every episode with some crap drama. ugh.

suppose you're thinking about a plate of shrimp. suddenly somebody will say like 'plate' or 'shrimp' or 'plate of shrimp', out of the blue, no explanation.

If only we knew.
You need to watch more than one episode of this show to get the feel of it. It's really not as OMG ZANY as everyone wants to think it is.
That's...not really what happens. In fact, the first two seasons were pretty much all allusion. It was only in year three that the romantic stuff became more prominent, and even then it wasn't the biggest part of the show. Compared to a typical American sitcom, the romance is both more subtle and realistically drawn-out.atoga wrote:and plus they added a full on romantic subplot to the to the american version, instead of in the british version where they were mostly content to allude to it rather than wasting five minutes of every episode with some crap drama. ugh.

that's because the first two seasons were carbon copies of the brit version (exact same script, similar direction)
"compared to a typical american sitcom" -- what a great claim to mediocrity. way to miss the point subbie <3
i never said it was a horrible show though, i've probably seen 3 or 4 episodes of the american version in passing and it was sorta funny (steve carrell is awesome), but it really pales in comparison to the original, which is one of the few tv series i genuinely enjoy.
also post origins of blargh plz

So I say again, watch more than "3 or 4" episodes. It has really grown into its own over the past few seasons, and the writing is really smart. Some weak moments, obviously, but I (for one) think it stands toe to toe with the original. Rent the DVDs, you might be suprised.
Er, no. They only copied the first episode of the British version - every episode since then has been original.atoga wrote:that's because the first two seasons were carbon copies of the brit version (exact same script, similar direction)
