American Gangster
This basically sums up the story;
http://www.duckandcover.cx/forums/viewtopic.php?t=18645
It was a pretty long movie 2 hours and 40 minutes and I was expecting to be pretty slow because of that but it was actually alright. It tells a big story so its not like the movie is being dragged out longer than it should be.

Except no DiCaprio to fuck it up royally. And I like Denzel a lot. This sounds worth my time.Manoil wrote:Yeah... it's just one of those movies that, like the Departed, you can tell it's gonna be a really well-done movie just from the trailer.MR Snake wrote:I saw it too, a very good and well made movie.
Based on the real life story of Frank Lucas, kingping gangsta of Harlem.

The ending was amazing, the rest of the film was almost completely extraneous. Definitely 2 hours and 40 minutes used poorly. What role did Cuba play in that film short of showing the flaw of wearing chinchilla? After the boxing scene why in fuck was he still there? Too many loose threads and not enough focus and build, still worth seeing though.
Shame Ridley Scott is no Martin Scorsese and Monahan didn't do the screenplay.Manoil wrote:Yeah... it's just one of those movies that, like the Departed, you can tell it's gonna be a really well-done movie just from the trailer.

Lets look at this objectively, shall we? William Monahan has up until this point written two screenplays that have been made into films, the first for Ridley Scott (Kingdom of Heaven) and the second for Martin Scorsese (The Departed). Again, keeping this objective, lets judge these films by their critical praise.
Kingdom of Heaven
Various teen choice award nominations:
-Best Actor: Orlando Bloom
-Choice Movie Liplock: Eva Green / Orlando Bloom
-Choice Movie Love Scene: Eva Green / Orlando Bloom
-Choice Moive: Action/Adventure
0 wins
The Departed
1 Academy Award Nomination
- Mark Wahlberg
4 Academy Award wins:
-Best Director - Martin Scorsese
-Best Motion Picture
-Best Achievement in Editing - Thelma Schoonmaker
-Best Writing, Adapted Screenplay - William Monahan
So there you have it, same writer, two directors and one hell of an uneven distribution. Also, as far as Monahan's "accomplisments" having only written two screenplays and already earned an Oscar I'd say he has accomplished quite a bit.
I think you also made a comment about the diversity of Martin Scorsese. The man has directed everything from documentary, musical, musical documentary, black comedy, historical drama, crime drama, biographical drama, thriller, period drama, etc. etc. etc. The last I checked Scott did drama, sci-fi and action.

Well the studio didn't chop an hour off of The Departed for the theatrical release, like they did with Kingdom of Heaven. I only saw the theatrical release, but from what I understand, Scott's extended cut of Kingdom is a significantly better film than what the critics / academy saw. Why are you comparing The Departed to Kingdom of Heaven anyway?Aonaran wrote:Lets look at this objectively, shall we?
Bah, I saw this shit... It's okay. Only okay.
Not like the godfather or something like they were reaching for. I highly doubt that it's going to rake in the awards, unless it's a really goddamn slow year for movies (every year)
