tell me how ubik is....and definitely pick up valis/scanner darkly if you haven't had the chance before..
Have you tried Flow my Tears, The Policeman Said?
It was a damn good read if I remember correctly.
I'll see if I can find my copy of A Scanner Darkly. Its in the pile somewhere.

Generally, most people around here are well read. More-so than the average person today.
I think we lack the organization and crumpets though.

absolutely loved flow my tears. almost more interesting was the essay after, i think it was called how to create a universe that doesn't fall apart? goes in more depth to the whole rome thing...fucking crazy stuff. god damn pkd for dying...we need him around still...
his books & short stories are (with a few exceptions) half allegory, half a place for him to play around with his weird philosophy nerd ideas, you shouldn't read them as you would typical stories (juss sayin' because i recall someone here complaining about that ). as i recall, the ending to flow my tears... was fucking incoherent and dumb.
however, if you want a good tense PKD story, i suggest VALIS - it seems to be less read but i found to be the most interesting thing i've read by him. it expands on the ideas in "how to build a universe that doesn't fall apart two days later," it's gnostic christianity mixed in with 70s weirdness, and includes some of the original writings from his mystical experiences as well.
anywayz i just finished (the?) watchmen, surprisingly good stuff. dac book club
definitely have valis and am pretty much a gnostic anyhow :p
if you haven't had a chance, on the official(?) page, they have a bunch of his exegisis up.... also apparently another book of his is pretty much a retelling of valis though i'm blanking on the name currently.
and yeah...flow my tears ending wasn't the best BUT at the same time brought up interesting ideas...i could tell he was just playing but found the book very interesting all the same.
Man in the high castle apparently suffered because he was using the i-ching to help him write the book the whole time, then towards the end it 'abandoned and misled him', kind of leading to the ending(haven't had a chance to read it yet, though from what i hear there really is no ending).

Watchman was a good read but I was a little disappointed on the ending follow through.

Ach, what's the deal with Penguin's "Penguin great books of the 20th century" line? My copy of Coetzee's Waiting for the Barbarians just arrived, and it seems that they've decided to outfit the paperback with FLAPS for some reason. Kinda like a dustjacket, only not. And the pages are not even properly cut (also the case with my first ed The Road hardcover, wonder if it'll be worth something in a few hundred years )
I don't get it. When a book is good, everyone compares it's epic pacing and story to Tolkein, and when it's bad they say exactly the same things in a negative light.
So is copying Tolkein a good or bad thing?
I think people should realise that every book has already been written before, and just learn to enjoy them.

EDIT
Lol Robert Jordan died. Pwnt. Crappy books.
Pfft.
The Wheel of Time series kicked the shit out of the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series.
Also, the Wheel of Time series is way too fucking long. I own up to book 10 and after book 5 it got a little old.
The "A Song of Ice and Fire" series are borderline romance novels with violence thrown in if I remember correctly.

Maybe you.. don't?
That is possible. I only read them, say, 7 years ago.

Just finished Arthur C. Clarke's Space Odyssey quadrilogy. If you like the movie 2001, the original novel makes a lot more sense out of it. The sequel 2010: Odyssey Two is a slightly better read. 2061 and 3001 are also decent. The last one explains almost everything and kills all the mystery. Plus half the book is just copied from the previous ones.
For a post apocalyptic book I highly recommend Swan Song by Robert McCammon. It's so much better than The Stand. They're both approximately the same length, but Swan is easier to get into and just feels better overall. Maybe I never liked King. Oh well, it has nukes so McCammon wins.
