Not quite like that, I'm afraid. Akira is totally not kawaii safe, one of the reasons it's my favorite manga of all time.

Did they ever do a DVD edition with the original American voice actors? I always thought they were FAR superior. Then again I guess I'm kind of a philistine for not watching the Jananese with subbys on but sometimes a guy gets nastalgic for his childhood, you know?

Well sometimes I prefer Japanese with subtitles. Got this 'real thing' feeling to it. Even if the translation is mediocre, you can make yourself a better picture of a situation than with dodgy nonemotional dubbing.

Meh, if you get the real thing with professionnels subtitles, it's alright, but half the time they're totally shitty.

I bought this Kurosawa 7 DVDs set on ebay, and of course it's all in jap with subs; you can't make out shit.

Sometimes I think I'm the only person on Earth who hasn't seen Akira. Is it overhyped?

Subhuman, what the hell have you been doing? Get a copy of The Road and Akira and enjoy life while it's still here. The movie is incredible. Anime is boring, strange, and totally unattractive to me but just on a level of holy shit! animation-wise you have to see the movie. And the soundtrack is great too. A really fun movie all around for anyone who considers themselves a movie fan.

and who the fuck cares what it is compared to the manga?! Are we just trying to out-nerd eachother here? Look I'm the bigger nerd, I read the manga, you just watched the movie you illiterate fools!!! The movie also isn't as good as a nice batch o weed but who the fuck cares?!?

It's... a special anime. I guess that about sums it up.
