I tried playing it a few weeks ago but the magic and shit just got too confusing for me and I would die a lot, it has like a billion spells and I didn't feel like trying to put the time into it to learn the ins and outs.Thor Kaufman wrote:Sieg Heil

I'd rather waste my time on feeding pigeons than play a piece of shit like IWD. It took me about 15 minutes to see it for what it is: generic and hack&slash fantasy adventure to the bone, which is exactly what I hate.
Plancescape was absolutely extremely ultra fucking mega dao zen bueno though. Definitely recommended for storyline and dialogue whores such as me. Therefore, I shall recommend it for myself and replay it once again.

Exactly. You have to admit: DAC is not an internet's sanctum for reserved statements and objective RPG gameplay analysis. And repetitive EXP grinding featuring a petty excuse for a story in the background, D&D style, is not a great game in my book.Smiley wrote:"Game was not to my liking, therefore it is a piece of shit".

So you spent more than those 15 minutes, in fact you've finished the game and at the end of it, it was exactly as you concluded in the beginning.
Also, you've gone from a "piece of shit", to "not a great game". Interesting.
So you're implying that a game has to be something like PS:Torment before being worth playing, right?

I never figured out why people hated/disliked Icewind Dale.
I played all the Balder's Gates and such and I honestly compare the first IWD with BG2. Mind you, one is longer with a better story, but I enjoyed both about the same.
I played both and was quite content.
Hell, the Heart of Winter expansion pack and that Trials of the Luremaster only made the game better.
IWD2 wasn't as good, but it was a good continuation, nonetheless.

Kind of. Actually, I just changed my tone from "I thought everybody knows this game is shit" to "wait a minute, someone on DAC actually likes it, so I guess I'll try and be more polite".Smiley wrote:Also, you've gone from a "piece of shit", to "not a great game". Interesting.
Not really. I just happened to randomly praise another RPG that was mentioned in the same thread, since it's better than IWD. My favourite game of all time, in fact.Smiley wrote:So you're implying that a game has to be something like PS:Torment before being worth playing, right?

Realistically, there are alot of games that suck, when you get the kind of coverage I have had, some games suck less.
I would prefer to play IWD over BG2 because it involves less fucking around coddling NPC mansack and more exploration of dungeons, loot and generalized monster rape.
Quests, if I remember correctly, can be vague, which is a nice change from the usual, go fetch me a 6 pack and an inflatable sheep scenario.
Now, I can see the Diablo references coming and I will say this, fuck you.
Personal preferance is personal preferance.
If you wanna wander for 6 hours attempting to find a needle in a haystack, I'm fine with that.
Just don't fucking jump on my ass because I like a game that doesn't play like an episode of Masterpiece Theatre.
I read books for that shit or play adventure games. Hell, I grew up when all I had was adventure games.
And my personal preferance on the PS:Torment front is this, it's tolerable and different.
It's not revolutionary or a game I want to play more than once.
I prefer not to torture myself.

Perhaps Icewind Gate would be a little more entertaining.
I have yet to try this out, but maybe sometime.
IWD and IWD2 had some nice bits, but they are really pretty much hack 'n' slash.
The mountaintop aquarium- nice.
The Hand of the Seldarine- nice.
The Viciscamera- nice.
Maybe a few other nice bits.
These could have factored into a PS: T type dealio very well.

Trials of the Luremaster suprised the shit out of me when I first played it.
Its an intriguing story and has some pretty good puzzles.
Much better than the original game but it is short.

Avoid it like the plague. 3rd edition does not mix with BG2 because you get skullfuckingly retarded things like every monster seemingly having a few levels of thief so they can get sneak attack multipliers and the ridiculous HP and damage resistance that ruined the later parts of Icewind Dale 2. It's like the Tactics mod, only for extreme munchkinizers, and isn't a fun way to play through the game.Redeye wrote:Perhaps Icewind Gate would be a little more entertaining.

I would say that you definetely should get both IWD1+IWD2 as I think they can either be bought together for little money or you can buy the big box with all of the crog games that takes place in Forgotten Realms for a little more money.
I have played Icewind Dale 1; I enjoyed it immensely, especially the fact that you explore a lot more than you do in BG2 and BG1. And of course also the fact that you make all 6 characters just like in a real PnP D&D game.
Be sure to make a character with high INT, WIS or CHAR as this will come in handy when persuading someone to do something early on the game...
