I'd like to look into that aswell. Can you give a quick 101 on how to speed up the start procedure of Win XP? I have currently tons of shit going on in the background.

Also, if you have some good porn links...

You can get a copy of XP Lite 2 by eXperience on TPB. It has a bunch of registry tweaks that it does for you and it comes with a bunch of drivers and codecs(automatically finds my SATA drive so thats bueno).

Also, it has Nero, ms office, some partitioner thing, antivirus+firewall, and installs by itself.

Here is a registry tweak from it. Open a blank notepad and drag it inside to see what the thingy contains.

I've always used this list: http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm
ctrl-alt-del -> processes and google all the processes you dont know about and see what the heck they are and if you need them
"buy" http://www.litepc.com/xplite.html and remove shit you dont need
download HiJackThis! then go here and delete shit you don't need
go here http://www.tweakxp.com/performance_tweaks.aspx

also other stuff that might help dunno:
defrag hdd often, I use jkdefrag
defrag pagefile, PageDefrag was free I think
clean up registry and stuff with ccleaner, defrag registry with some free software like free registry defrag
disable visual shit, right click my computer -> properties -> advanced -> performance -> adjust for best performance
switch to classic windows theme instead of vista in display properties
blablabla
hope this helps
Nero
if you're using newer Nero than 6, get rid of it, huge fucking piece of bloat.

So called registry cleaners dont speed up your system by making it more "slim", but deleting registry entries helps if drivers are fucked up for example, otherwise they are no use.
The only solution is to reinstall Windows every couple of months if you install lots of shit or be a real geek and use an OS that doesn't need a stupid registry to work.

A more important aspect is to keep the fans clean and twirling, I think, otherwise your CPU or GPU might lower their power.

the registry defrag software PiP linked to compacted my registry by 20%, thats quite a lot, admittedly it probably doesn't make much of a difference in modern Windowses but that's not just a couple of kilos we're talking about. Whatever I don't know butt crap about this stuff.

thats good advice, but throttling shouldnt happen until your cpu is burning hot and you can disable throttling (for cpu at least) altogether if it does it for some whatever stupid reason

Defragging once a week might be doing more harm than good since when you defrag your hd its working it quite a bit. Lots of stuff I tried to speed up my computer doesn't usually work or I just don't notice it. You may want to try out the tweakguide xp which is like a big document where a guy just lists all the stuff you can do to speed up your computer.

Also when I cleane out the dust inside my computer, especially the dust that is caked on my heatsink of the cpu I save like on average 10c. I also had a bit of problems with my graphics card showing red dots while playng portal and I couldn't figure out why but then I clean out all the dust inside the heatsink on the card and they went away.

Gimpmask, when you check to see your start up service do you ever have problems after disabling any of them?

defragging once a week shouldn't be too much since your files won't get all too defragmented in a week, hence less work to do. if you do it say daily or more then it's too much. but the reason i do this is because i run postgresql and it's pretty i/o heavy, defragging speeds things up a lot

i just disable all the services i know i won't need and set the ones i'm not sure about but might wanna disable on manual so they can start if they want to. i honestly don't know how much of a difference this makes but i don't like having all this useless shit running on my computer

i clean my computer like a couple of times a year anyway since it has a bunch of fans and collects dust pretty quicky (i removed all the dust filters and crap like that to get a decent airflow), but it's easy to clean cos i spent some time on wire management when building the pc.

I suggest we, but what I mean YOU, make a list, a step by step list, of procedures intended to make a freshly installed system be ultimately Aryan and made of win.

I've tried services lists like that blackvenom one.

I found that shutting off services helps until you actually need the service.
You then get wonderful random errors stemming from nothing.

I assume you use both ad-aware and spybot as well?

don't know this one.
I recommend this - in 'stealth' mode (it's a trial, but you can work around it eh);
this is freeware good alternative (accidentally made by the same guys who made the registry defragmenter I recommended to Gimpy)

hehe, well i went pretty safe on those services, i dont have all that many on disabled but on manual instead so they can start if they need to. just the annoying, useless and potentially omg dangerous are disabled

I don't use ad-aware anymore since after running spybot, ad-aware never found anything, and this was before i used anti-virus or firewall or anything and surfed www.sex.com and found loads of crap all the time.

as for defragging, i used o&o before, it's a good one, but jkdefrag gets the job done just as well, is free, and around 200kb. whatever floats your boat i guess

msconfig is a nice built-in tool that allows disabling of all the extraneous startup items and services that run with XP.

Thats usually the way I go. Most of his list is pretty safe unless you are involved in some kind of retarded full access network...

Spend 800 on a real computer.

If you have any qualms about speed after the nazi regime you put your computer thru constantly, your problem is assuredly hardware... Or that you're too fast for your computer.

I spent 1k on mine and built it myself.
Too bad my rig owns but my cards blow. I built it right before the new generation of ATI cards came out. Dual 512 HD2600XT's just don't compare.
