Alright, FUCK Tideland, see Fear and Loathing or Time Bandits instead. Also FUCK Eternal Sunshine, see Human Nature instead. Oh and FUCK Rashomon, see The Bad Sleep Well instead.

PiP: While on Lars, have you seen The Element of Crime or Breaking the Waves?

Rashomon is like Kane only terminally foreign. They are both goddamned important films and I have an ocean of respect for what they have done for film narratively and otherwise but they are both a fucking chore to watch. Sorry. It's fucking true. Toshiro, badass that he is, hopping from one foot to another yelping doesn't help the cause either. FUCK that film.

PiP: I have heard Element of Crime isn't as good as other Lars but it's a post-apocalyptic neo-noir crime thriller shot entirely in sephia. So, you know, take from that what you will. Personally I loved it.

That was pretty ridiculous and way too over-the-top, especially in such a staid Japanese flick.

One of the best old-school Japanese movies I've seen is Hara-kiri/Seppuku. That's an intense movie.
any recommendations along them lines?
Scanners
The Dead Zone
Gozu
Mulholland Drive
Inland Empire

Not a movie, actually, but there's a planned rerelase of the classic Cold War era spy series I Spy on dvd. I've been waiting for a decent dvd release of the series for a while. Unlike most tv shows, this one doesn't suck. 69 hours of material for $60 is quite a bargain, in my opinion. :blurb:

Harakiri kicks major ass. Tatsuya Nakadai is a bad motherfucker. Seen Face of Another or Sword of Doom? Also badass Nakadai flicks.

Pretty funny movie if you treat it as entertainment and not a history lesson. The Russians still refuse to own up to the war crimes committed by their troops when the tide turned, so you can't expect their take on WW2 to be particularly balanced.
Cimmerian Nights wrote:For a good, multifaceted movie about the Eastern front, where there are no good guys and bad guys, I recommend Cross of Iron.

Another great WWII movie is Hell in the Pacific - the whole movie
Totalement, Stalingrad is also quite good.

Holy fucking noodles, I'll never watch anything contaminated with that vermin Lynch again. His previous movies were somewhat OK, but Inland Empire is a fucking insult. If you're into unconventional movies, you're better off with a Bergman or a Tarkovsky or even a Godard movie.

No and yes, have to check that out, thx.

Twilight Samurai is a damn good contemporary samurai flick.

I love those old Zatoichi flicks too, real dark, lots of pathos, mixed in with fart jokes and the trademark of Japanese cinema the "arterial spray".

What's weird is the Hollywood version of Stalingrad (Enemy at the gates) is probably worse. :Zionist controlled media conspiracy?:

E-man scared the shit out of me as a kid when it first came out. It's actually Lynch's most conventional and human story - still can't beleive Mel "Blazing Saddles" Brooks fucking produced it!
The Brood I loved when I was a teen and into gorey Clive Barker novels, can't say that I think it aged well since then. (I take that back, I'm thinking of Nightbreed)
Inland Empire is a fucking insult.
Well, it does seem that most Lynch movies now start off digestible, and slowly descend into wacky shit. It's the "holy shit" moments where smoke starts shooting out of your ears that - but yeah, the bunny suits wtf was that?
