Mad Max director George Miller has announced a video game based on the iconic films. It's to be made by Creative Alliance and directed by God of War II director Cory Barlog (whose last name is almost cool). Newsweek has posted an interview with Miller. Here are some highlights:

On why the movie "Mad Max: Fury Road" was never filmed:

We were all ready to go, within eleven weeks of shooting the next
"Mad Max" movie, "Fury Road." This was way back when the war in Iraq
started, and that really threw this out for a whole host of reasons,
not the least of which was that the American dollar crashed against the
Australian dollar. And apart from that, just insurances, getting
vehicles and stuff there on container ships--all that slowed down
around the world. So we had to move on to "Happy Feet," because that
was going to take a long time.

On whether Mel Gibson will star in the movie and the videogame:

Oh, it wouldn't be with Mel....I didn't realize it was so long ago but, he was 20, well, he was 21 when
he first played Mad Max. He's in his 50's now--it's too old. Yeah, I
think for "The Road Warrior" he was 22 or 23 or something, so he was
just a baby back then.

There's not much else in the interview about the actual game. The interview deals mostly with how Miller is going to start getting heavily involved in making video games. Interesting. Here's the intro to the article, and here is part 1 and part 2.

Newsweek also has a 2 part interview with Cory Barlog along similar lines. Check out part 1 here, and part 2 here.

Even if mel is like 50 lots of older guys have made combacks to their series playing older men and they have been successful. Rambo, Rocky, T3, Indiana and all those types. Conceptually making a mad max 4 with mel gibson would probably have been successful but I don't think Mel would be the type who would accept and offer like that. Heath Ledger would be a good choice...oh wait.

Well Mel could voice the character of Max. An older, harsher voice wouldn't harm in a post apoc game, where everyone struggles to survive yadda yadda yadda...
But what kind of game could it be? A FPS with just a bunch of enemies? An RPG with 2 or 3 locations (Max didn't see any civilisation between MM2 and MM3, what was 13 years)? An adventure with nothing to do (besides collecting scraps)? A driving game fueled by farts (...)? They can't make a prequel, as Mad Max 1 covers everything we need to know.
The only thing that would remotely make sense is a setting when the actual Apoxaclypse happens. Lots of hostile people losing it as they face the fiery death. People forming caravans and leaving cities to avoid instant death. Planes crashing due to EMP (Maybe some spin of to play as Captain Walker?
). You in between, with the bit of extra experience due to your chosen exile before the war. You would still have an Interceptor and you could upgrade it during the game, so in the end it'd reach Mad Max 2 standard ("upgraded" interior, fuel tanks on the back, maybe some tuning on the engine just for the sakes of being able to add some HP to your car during the game).
Although, the war was just mentioned in MM3, I assume it happened before MM2. Correct me if I'm wrong.
