Running
Running
I just thought about how it wouldn't harm any of us to run a bit more.
What is the best way to get a few more points on your E(ndurance)?
Just slow jogging? Or fast sprints? Or a mix of both? Drop some ideas/techniques!

Re: Running
this all depends on your running experience a lot - for how long have you been running, and how often? also what do you want to accomplish by running? jogging is pretty good for beginners overall and you probably shouldn't be sprinting or anything until after 6+ months. you'll get endurance +1, lose fat and raise your VO2 max plus strengthen the joints and muscles in your feet or whateverNooke wrote:I just thought about how it wouldn't harm any of us to run a bit more.

About 2 or 3 times. During my entire life.Gimp Mask wrote:this all depends on your running experience a lot - for how long have you been running, and how often? also what do you want to accomplish by running? jogging is pretty good for beginners overall and you probably shouldn't be sprinting or anything until after 6+ months. you'll get endurance +1, lose fat and raise your VO2 max plus strengthen the joints and muscles in your feet or whateverNooke wrote:I just thought about how it wouldn't harm any of us to run a bit more.

I can't say I have much experience. I ask because I'm in a prime position to "start from zero".

Slow jogging to begin with, unless you want aching joints. Your first objective should be to be able to jog uninterrupted a short route(maybe 15-20 minutes). Only then slowly add pace and length. Since you're only beginning, you should achieve results fairly quickly. If your feet aren't 100% in shape(for example, after a jog the day before), do something else instead.
Marching in heavy gear is the best way to get in shape, but dunno, maybe go hiking some place nice.

Good topic. Several weeks ago I started jogging a mile a day, which took about 20 minutes. In the last week I've been jogging 2 miles at a little over 20 minutes. Even though I've been hiking and weightlifting for years this is so much more tiring. On a warm day I lose every drop of sweat from my body. Thank god I'm not a smoker and never was.
My best advice: get the right shoes! You don't need to spend $100 on professional running shoes. Payless has some really good stuff for $12.

You know, this might sound stupid, but you could have a lesson with an athletics coach just to ensure that your running technique is correct. I ran for years, until I got a coach and he completely corrected my technique. It's not a massive thing, but it's just the kind of stuff that you emphasize when you run, also technique changes a lot depending on pace, so I would definately recommend it.
I used to run 12KM 2-4 times a week a few years ago and it was absolutely amazing. I really wish that I could do it again, but now that I'm here in London, it's difficult to find a nice place to run uninterrupted.
Like Mad Max RW said, it's just a different type of exercise, I've been weightlifting for years as well and it's just a different kind of fitness. I would definately recommend you to do it.

I strongly disagree with Mad Max RW - I'd definitely spend $100 on shoes especially when starting out, you don't get good stuff for $12. You might be overpronating or supinating, and will save yourself from a lot of pain & aches if you choose the right shoes for you. Sport stores in Finland have these days where you can test your pace (or whatever it's called in English), and they'll give you advice on what kind of shoes you should get, good shoes fix your pace. Shoes are the only thing you need to invest on so spend a few bucks on them please
Don't think in terms of distance but in terms of time when beginning, 15-20 mins to begin with like Vasikka suggested sounds fine. Take it super easy for the first couple of weeks, if you can't talk while jogging without panting, you're probably going too fast for now and your pulse is high, lower pulse running develops your stamina faster. You can just say run for 3 min and walk for 1 min too and then raise the time of running/lower the amount of walking as you progress
Just run regularly, 3-4 times a week, but take it slowly when you start out, that's most important. It takes a long time for your knees, shins and ankles to develop and get used to running.
Lesson with a coach sounds gut also

I wouldn't recommend anyone to buy any sport related shoe at payless, the harm they could do to your feet and whole body is pretty serious. Also, 100 bucks isn't really proffessional grade type of running shoe, they could easily go up to like 150 or 200 at least for basketball shoes back in the day. I'm not saying price determines quality but there are some barriers for when it applies, I would say any sport related shoe under 50 bucks is testing your luck unless they are shoes from past years that the store is trying to get rid of. I once bought some shitty football shoes(reebok) and my heels were bruised like all hell and I could barely walk let alone run for a couple weeks. I like to use New Balance now but I dunno how well they are known outside the states.Mad Max RW wrote:Good topic. Several weeks ago I started jogging a mile a day, which took about 20 minutes. Everyone here is listing some good advice but I would also recommend just walking before actually doing some jogging/running, many people don't consider walking as an excersize but if you pick the right paths you can get a pretty good work out. It would probably be a wise choice to do if your a noobie or something.
