- He writes, therefore he is a writer.
- The Dark Tower books are wildly overrated.
- The best thing he's written is a tossup between Hearts in Atlantis and The Stand, although the former only works if you've passed adolescence and have some perspective about it (and if you haven't seen the movie), so in your case I'd wait a few years before checking it out.

Uh oh! I think I offended a fan-boy, or do you prefer a fan-man? I don't think I'll be checking them out though, since there are plenty of authors out there who don't put themselves in books because of their huge egos, and who don't treat their readers like stupid shits who are willing to swallow anything he prints. I do have to admit to reading only the DT series, but it gave me an overall idea of his writing, and I didn't like it. But that's just my adolescent opinion, don't mind me.

Like Sub said, The Stand is probably the masterpiece, or perhaps his cornerstone/standard? Anyhow, Hearts in Atlantis was great, as were a few others, I really liked the Shining, and the one where those 4 guys have their reunion out in the woods, get possessed by aliens, and chase the last alien down to annihilate (spl?) it.
The last 2 books sucked in the DT series, I really enjoyed the first 4, the 5th got a bit weird, but it was okay still at that point.
The problem with King is the movies made out of his books. Dreamcatcher(the one with the four friends in the wood) was ridiculously bad. Doesn't make me want to read his books. I know I should get over that, but it's not like there's nothing else to read.
I can't really stand King's books because the pacing in them is usually terrible and there's usually a lot of useless fluff, but kind of like his short stories where he doesn't need to fill the pages just for the sake of pagecount.
Then again, I probably picked some of his worst ones to read.
