God of Movies: Prologue

There can be only one. The greatest of them all. The man (women suck at movies, except for American Psycho director) who has singlehandedly ripped the nuts off the media of film and jammed them down its throat. This is his story. The battle of a lifetime... the fight to determine who.. is.. God of... MOVIES!!!1lol!!

I shall forthwith humbly make my recommendations, and likewise any man or TT whom believes themselves true disciples of film may make their recommendations as well. This thread is only the prologue, and the next thread shall contain the poll which will decide.

My candidates for God:

Mel Gibson- For incredible bravery both in front of and behind the camera. I dare any man to dispute his greatness.
Mad Max series
Lethal Weapon series
Braveheart
The Patriot (unfairly written off as Braveheart clone imho)
Chicken Run... lol
Apocalypto

Clint Eastwood- He has braved the acting arena for many a millenia, and made his mark as one of the greatest directors of our time. I see Mel and Clint as equals in many respects and so include them both for judgement.

Jackie Chan- While I realize that he has no chance of becoming movie god, he may deserve it more than any other, risking his health almost constantly in order to entertain. I also have yet to see a film with as much awesome karate action as RITB (uh, well except for Ong Bak maybe).

You missed Clint Eastwood's Dollars Trilogy. Amazing stuff. Of those four Clint is the winner, without a doubt.

You could add Steven Spielberg(Duel, Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Indiana Jones, Schindler's List, Amistad) maybe, and most certainly Kubrick(Spartacus, Dr. Strangelove, 2001, Clockwork Orange, Shining, Full Metal Jacket, Barry Lindon).

For runner ups:
Jean Reno for Leon and Ronin

Bill Murray for many films, but just recently The Life Aquatic

Gary Oldman also for his fantastic villains (and Harry Potter)

and Christian Bale for everything from Newsies and American Psycho to The Machinist and Batman.

I know you said for, but I'm not counting Arnold because he's too good.

You forgot Red Heat, Raw Deal, and Total Recall(probably his best movie after T2).

But I agree. Arnold for movie God.

Absolutely...Total Recall is amazing. Paul Verhoeven should be on a list of director-gods.

Oh wow, already some excellent candidates. Christian Bale I wanted to include in mine actually, because imo he is the greatest modern actor, and although I love Batman, and the idea of Bale+Terminator, I enjoy him much more in odder roles.

Arnold fucking rocks, and is a fierce opponent for GoM. Can't believe I didn't think of him (True Lies). No doubt he is the ruler of American Action flicks.

The thing that gets to me about Lee is that he had so much potential as not only a karate star, but an actor as well, though the only movie he made that I really can enjoy is Enter The Dragon. The other few movies he did are pretty boring to me.

Samuel L. Jackson is fun, but does pretty much the same thing in most movies, and Denzel I've never really enjoyed. I'll add all of them though, if you wish.

I am pretty impressed by actors who turn around and become great directors. That's why I picked Mel, and Clint. Sylvester Stallone could be in there also I suppose. I will only add him, though, if someone else recommends him.

Oh shit, Coen brothers!!! I'm adding them tomorrow!

Stand By Me and Dark City come to mind, and while he hasn't really directed, and he's probably more renown for his portrayal of Jack Bauer. Unfortunately he seems to be more of an angry pisspot now then anything, but I've always enjoyed the way he says dialog.

Has Edward Norton done anything note worthy since American History X? I remember seeing a few of his movies now and then and liking them, but over all thats his only movie that I can recall at all.

The music, gloominess, Kurt Russell... this guy is the master of suspense; the movies hold you in their grip right from the beginning credits. Inspired by Subhuman's Alien thread, I rewatched The Thing last week and dare to say it's definitely one of my top two horror/suspense movies.

I wonder how you can consider Mel Gibson for God of Movies though, except for Braveheart and Mad Max, he didn't do anything great. Sure Lethal Weapon was funny but so was Beverly Hills Cop.

Really? I guess I just see Braveheart as being much more awesome than you might. For me, it and The Roadwarrior are in my top ten of all time list. If you think about it, what he did with Apocalypto is pretty insane. I can't think of a historical movie that felt closer to the depicted place and time (not that I would know what it was like).

And God of Movies can be pretty subjective as one of the main conditions is awesomeness, which can depend on taste. I just see Mel as being an awesome guy.

I prefer verbal heroes > actionpacked. Although, why hasn't Russel Crowe been mentioned yet? Like, just for the lulz?
