Students Learn Fallout

Post by POOPERSCOOPER »

[ Game -> Article ]

Piper Viper alerted me to an article about some guy who gave some students Fallout 1 and 2 and here is some stuff he talks about:

My students have been playing Fallout 1 and 2 for a couple of weeks, preparing for the release of Fallout 3.
They are an unexpected mix of gamers: a small handful of RPG veterans,
a large majority of relatively casual gamers (mostly sports games and
shooters), and a few with almost no experience playing video games at
all. Quite a challenge for a teacher who expected to be met by a small
legion of hardcore D&Ders with a possible cosplayer or LARPer
thrown in. Fortunately, they're all terrific guys willing to try
anything I throw at them.

So when I handed them Fallout
(half played the original, half the sequel) with no instructions or
special preparation, they struggled. A lot. They had the original
manuals, but almost nobody read them. After exiting the vault, they had
no idea where to go or what to do. Their movements were limited for no
apparent reason; "action points" made no sense; and they died within
minutes nearly everywhere they went.

If you want to read the whole article I suggest you dance your way here.

How old are his students? 5? I was 13 when I first played Fallout, and didn't even really understand english, yet I could still understand the game's mechanics and grasp most of the game.

To tell you the truth I didn't complete understand the game mechanics when I played but also I didn't really have the patience to learn them so I tossed it back in the pile till later. I think I got into combat in the rat cave and killed a rat but was still in turnbase though I couldn't see an enemy and was confused.

I'm a combination of Pooperscooper and Susan, really. Around 11 years old, no grasp of English, tossed it in a pile only to recover it there a year later. And legend was born :che:

I struggled alot when I first got the game. The story was what kept me going through it.

The first time i played fallout it was a demo that came with a magazine. It was only junktown but to me it was enough to get in deep love. When i got the full game i even sleeped in my chair in front of the monitor. I finished the game at least 15 times and the only two things i hated on FO1 was the deadline to deliver the water chip and the game ending when you blew up the warhead. When Fallout 2 came out only god knows how much adicted i was to the game... it was far more like a drug than a game to me... i can't even find the propper words to decribe it. The funny thing about fallout its that insted of using the game manual i had to use a dictionary cause by the time i got FO1 the only english i knew was to count to 20 and say my name... about two years later english was like my natural language, it's still very far from perfect but taking into account that almost everything i know about english i learned it from fallout i think its pretty okay. :blahblah: :bored: :bored: :bored: :bored: :bored: Well... i had to end up telling the story of my life... Fallout rocks and that's it

Sounds very much like my story, however mine is cooler coz it involves me. B)

I instantly fell in love with "Scrapheap", now Junktown and its thugs burstfiring me to shreds with a minigun. Fallout 1 demo > Fallout 3. Obviously.

Fallout 3 OBVIOUSLY!!! Honestly... due to the Fallout fan i am i cannot go without at least trying it but just for starters you can forget about the dark humour that fallout got us used to and the guys from bethesda who obviously dont have that little vein being pumped with fallout blood shoulded try to effort themselfs in order to keep fallout fans happy... But it would seem that they have more important things to do like oblivion expansions and other stuff... to them fallout 3 isn't even secondary stuff. So unless they get a few guys that worked on the previous versions of fallout on fallout 3 i think we are all going to have a big heartbreak.

Just one of those time when i wish im wrong... But otherwise how do you explain the fact that fallout 3 has been postponed so many times?
