Pete Hines on Why It's Fallout "3"

Post by King of Creation »

[ Game -> Article ] - More info on Game: Fallout 3

Pete Hines was asked by MTV Multiplayer why Fallout 3 really is the third in the series.

“We do consider it to be part of the series and
we are trying to continue the legacy of ‘Fallout 1′ and ‘2′,” explained
Hines. “That’s part of it, which is that we wanted to fit in to what’s
going on. We didn’t want to suddenly just call it ‘Fallout’ because
then it’s like we’re trying to pretend like the first one didn’t
[exist].”

The way Hines talked about the subject, you could sense that making
Bethesda’s take on “Fallout” as an official third entry raised the
stakes for them on a personal level. It drove them to make this a true
“Fallout” sequel, not a mere reboot, even if the visuals had changed.

“There’s only one ‘Fallout’ ever. There’s only one ‘Fallout 2,’”
said Hines. “Those games will always exist and we didn’t want to do
anything that was seen as trying to start over again. Honestly, we
never really seriously considered anything else. It’s the next
‘Fallout’ game, that’s what we’re trying to to, both for people who
played the original games and people who never have.”

What do you think?

Can someone find that quote where he said they put it on the east coast so they could separate it from the other two and make it completely different?

Guy is a fucking douche bag.
I miss the good ol' USSA.

I'm postponing judgement until I actually finish the game, but I think a decent test of good faith to the original series is whether or not vast swathes of the original story/gameplay elements may as well never have happened.

edit - incidentally i can remmeber a lot of Tibsun fans complaining about Tiberium Wars on this basis - that you could count on one hand the number of things that actually survived from tibsun (though this was improved a little by Kane's Wrath), and that in most respects tibsun may as well never have happened at all. I didn't really care much either way, but I'm hoping FO3 won't go the same way, but whatever.

So far I'm torn on this. Mutants seem to be no more than large flesh-eating raiders, no hint of either Children ideology or progressive Broken Hills style outlook. Certainly haven't seen any muties in any settlements. I haven't finished the game, so maybe either or both will crop up later. On the other hand you have the dubious overseer and the Enclave. Not sure of the current state of the Enclave, so I dunno. I guess I'll make my mind up when I actually finish it.

That's because these mutants are not the remnants of the Master's army, they're from Vault 87.

There are at least 2 friendly super mutants that I know of.

Harold is at Oasis... up to the north there's a great moutain that has a little path to go inside, its some kind of druids camp and they think harold is a god cause they believe he is the begining of a new life to the wastelands due to the speed his roots spread. And harold thinks they are retards... yes... its a very interesting dialogue...
