I don't understand how in the fuck this thing keeps getting 10 out of 10. On it's own merits, I'd give it a 7 or 8 out of 10, depending on my mood; when I consider it along the first two Fallouts, that drops to a 5 or 6.

For whatever god awful reason Oblivion kept getting 10 out of 10, and it wasn't until a good 8 months to a year afterward that reviewers pulled their head out and said...hey Oblivion has some pretty awkward flaws...Retlaw83 wrote:I don't understand how in the fuck this thing keeps getting 10 out of 10. I'm not sure if it's mob mentality with these idiots, or like some people have pointed out it's a "you scratch my back I'll scratch yours" between the reviewers and the developers, but it does make sense....kind of.
If you dig back a ways in the news section, I believe it was Gamestop that originally gave Oblivion a 10/10 - and the same person who reviewed it when it first came out wrote an article a year later pointing out some of the biggest flaws - i.e. dialogue - poor voice acting, people sounding like they are carrying on a conversation with themselves, etc

Re: More Reviews
"It is a mark of any good game these days that it causes me to stay up well beyond my normal bedtime without even realising, and if time spent gormlessly fixated to happenings on-screen were in any way related to review scores then Fallout 3 would probably be heading for a ten on that alone. At five in the morning this past Saturday when I finally dragged myself off my 360 and toward sleep, I was convinced that, somehow, Fallout 3 was going to be dangerously close to being a perfect game.Frater Perdurabo wrote:Ultra ninjas huh? Subsequent play and completion have dulled that thought slightly, but not by much. No – Fallout 3 is not as close to perfect as I’d possibly hoped it could have been, but it came within a whisker. The story of the young adventurer who escapes their nuclear vault community to chase after their father is one that is hugely mouldable to your own personal choices and actions, and one that could take you well over fifty hours to complete should you wish to check everything off the checklist."

Do critics not exist to maintain some kind of standard in a given industry? If this is true, then what good are perfect scores to the evolution of the gaming medium?
A perfect game does not exist, yet there is some need to give at least five to ten games a year that perfect score. It just goes against basic logic. If a review even mentions anything that is critical about a so-called "perfect" game, then both the review and the score are voided in my opinion, because the critic is directly contradicting themselves.
Also, perfect scores, to me, just signify that the critic has severely limited imagination. It would take me only a few seconds to come up with critiques of GTA4, which I feel is as close to perfect as a game has come in a long time.
My point, if I had one, is that there is always room for improvement. I guess I'm preaching to the choir though.
