That is so true. Unreal 2 was universally bashed by all the reviewers as derivative and shit while in fact it wasn't. True, it does not look or play like a sequel to unreal but that's not necessarily a bad thing. The gameplay was sweet and I was amazed by the graphics when I played it recently on full settings. A very good game and totally overlooked.Mad Max RW wrote:
Twinkie's thread about something reminded me about Unreal 2. I waited a year after release before checking it out and was pleasantly surprised. It doesn't hold a candle to Unreal 1, but is better in almost every way to Halo. And then the XMP multiplayer thing came out and for a few weeks it was amazing. The singleplayer campaign was fun, varied, had some good weapons, and the main characters were kinda interesting. Although, it did feel like a lot of background stories weren't explored and the whole game was very rushed. A few years later I replayed it when Doom 3 came out and Unreal 2 is the better game by far.

By far my favorite game. I still have the game though I don't have a NES anymore.

fk yeah that was a brutal game
Ah, I loved this one. Blood, violence and Nazis.
Rott was the best thing that happened in the 90's. If you don't count Fallout, of course. (And although the enemies weren't really nazis.)
Damn this brings back so much memories.

I know this was overlooked, simply because it was on the mac... Marathon was one of the first fps' to have dual wielding, and a full editor suite (tools released by the mac community at first, and officially released by bungie with marathon infinity). It was also a big contributor to the concepts behind Halo.
If you want to try them out, they are a free download from bungie.org. cheers!

Honestly, Halo never really seemed so awesome because it felt utterly generic in its asthetics, and after hearing about/playing marathon, it just seemed like another changeup on Doom.jimmypneumatic wrote:I know this was overlooked, simply because it was on the mac... Halo is successful for the multiplayer expirience, certainly not plot/character/design originality.

Marathon was for it's day the epitomy of the multiplayer experience, granted there were no online matchup services back in those days, so you had to form games through appletalk (LAN).Manoil wrote: Honestly, Halo never really seemed so awesome because it felt utterly generic in its asthetics, and after hearing about/playing marathon, it just seemed like another changeup on Doom.

I shouldn't have even mentioned halo, because marathon is a good game in its own right. Way better than doom.

But Doom beat it to the scene, and the early bird always gets first dibs.
Goldeneye on Nintendo 64 was some hot shit, but when Perfect Dark came around, with multiple additions, it didn't recieve the same praise-- same graphics, same gameplay. Though it did have some following, PD never came close to the fanbase of Goldeneye.
I'm not sure about Wolfenstein, but Doom beat Marathon to the scene. The process repeats itself.

True, not to mention that the series never even graced the pc until marathon 2. I'd say Marathon never even recieved an inkling of the attention it deserved until halo was out, and all the fanboys were like "ooooh look at bungie, they made halo, what else they got?". Most of my friends that have played halo and 2 and 3 are like "marathon? what's that".
