Conan remake

Post by King of Creation »

Not sure how I feel about this. I love Arnie, and the Conan movies are some of my favorite of all time. Who's going to play him?

http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=50365
The Hollywood Reporter says that Brett Ratner has weighed two high-profile projects the past few weeks: Paramount's fourth installment of the "Beverly Hills Cop" franchise and a 21st century take on "Conan" co-produced by Nu Image/Millennium and Lionsgate.

Ratner has now made his choice and is in final negotiations to direct Conan, which is aiming for a release in early 2010.

The trade says that Ratner jived to the Conan script by Joshua Oppenheimer and Thomas Dean Donnelly, who looked to Robert E. Howard's original pulp stories of the 1930s to create their take on the character. The writers are doing a quick polish to incorporate some of Ratner's ideas.

Joe Gatta and Avi Lerner of Millennium Films are producing, along with Paradox Entertainment president and CEO Fredrik Malmberg.

Millennium and Lionsgate are eyeing a potential franchise and envision a very R-rated approach in the $85 million budget range. Preproduction is under way for a shoot at Nu Image's Nu Boyana Studio in Bulgaria.

"The story opens on the battlefield where Conan is born and tells the origin story that sets the stage for what will be the first of multiple films," Lerner said.

I think it's not really a remake though? There are like tons of Conan material; stories in magazines, movies, books, comics, etc, so it might just be a different take on the subject. Though for me, Conan is Arnie.

To be honest I never cared for originals so I'm all for a remake. I really dig the Conan thing, but the originals never really captured the barbaric side too well.

What a fucking joke. Someone needs to pull a Brokeback on this asshole and drag him behind an F-150 by his cock. Really.

Arnold is Conan, just like he is the Terminator. Hence why neither should be continued without him. Sadly, now both are. It's just like making an "Escape..." movie without Kurt Russel or a Mad Max without Mel Gibson.

Aren't both of those in the works right now, though?

Fury Road is either still in pre-production for going on a decade, or scrapped, unless you have new information?

And I'll need links to an Escape sequel, this is complete news to me.

'Pulp Fiction'

Post by 4too »

'Pulp Fiction'

Tarzan and Conan started as pulp print heroes.

Think of all the movie Tarzans in the A or B releases and later on the small screen.

Consider Conan as a vehicle for -yet another- Mr. Universe champion or similar 'mighty hewed' pro athlete?

Perhaps Conan will take the James Bond route, and we can anticipate a series of actors in the role.
Color in each Bond with a different palette, Connery, Moore, or any of the others.
Could the next Conan carry on as a money maker like the Bond's with out the marque crowding name of Schwarzenegger?

Mood. The recent Batman's tried for a darker ambiguity of world view, and maybe the next Conan production will favor this flavor.

So.

If the producers, screen writers, and directors allow enough synergy with pulp text canon,
could have a conscious / unconscious back story that might fill in the empty spaces
and push the Hyperborean Wanderer beyond the limits .... of ...

yet another 'sword and sandal' Steve Reeves' *muscle boy* movie.

I went through a time in my late teens where I read a dozen or so of the Conan books - the *old* ones - and some of the storylines I thought were absolutely write for a screenplay - given the right actor of course, and much moreso of the first Conan movie, rather than the PG kiddie fare with the thief (although he was pretty funny) and the insanely hot bucktoothed princess from the second one.

I can't help it, but I always think of "Furry Road" when I hear about this Mad Max sequel. The feeling gets stronger the more I read about the subject.
