Well I suppose you *do* have antivirus software installed already? Something that has an active system guard, not just a scanner? That should take care of the basic viruses, worms etc. but most of the time you need *additional* software for taking care of malware, spyware, trojans and hijackers and shit.
The interweb's full of free gems.

I have spybot, AVG, and lavasoft adaware.Dogmeatlives wrote:ok so i want to try a virus detection program first. Can anyone suggest some others?
Oh, the teatimer thingy with spybot monitors registry. Good to have that running.
Problems only extremely rarely.
Also, learn to avoid porn sites that redirect or ask you to download a "streaming video player".

Thanks Kashluk and everyone else. I ran the Spybot program, and actually found a shitload of stuff that I believe is unrelated to my issue. Removed it all. I haven't had it scan through everything yet, but I will while I sleep tonight. Thanks a whole bunch!Kashluk wrote:Well I suppose you *do* have antivirus software installed already? For an anti-Spyware program, I would suggest Lavasoft's Ad-Aware, have had better experiences with it than Spybot.
Also, if I were you I'd actually buy an antivirus.
I am using Norton right now, got two months free with my new laptop but once those two months are out I'll probably revert to Bitdefender.
I used AVG for years, decided to try out Bitdefender and it found like 4 viruses on my computer that other scanners hadn't detected for years. Also, like a year ago when I got it, it was rated as the best antivirus. I am a little concerned that Norton takes up a little too much system resource.
My brother is using McAfee and his feedback has been generally positive.
But dude, Bitdefender.

I prefer Antivir or AVG myself, both free. I've had my share of Norton and F-Secure, both you need to pay for. I must say that their free counterparts kick their ass any day of the week. The "bigger and better" software is usually way less optimized and uses a lot of your system resources. Then you go and disable a lot of it's features so you can actually type a Word document and the edge they used to have over freeware is thus lost.

If you want an all-in solution, try HitManPro. It's a free program that uses almost all commonly available anti-spyware and anti-virussoftware. Just install the base program, set it up so it acknowledges all User Policies and let it run for a day. This will whipe most of the virusses/spyware from your computer.
It's no perfect solution though, but it allowes you to backup you stuff more easily before you reinstall Windows (which is the only perfect solution )

And reinstall Windows, dogmeatlives. Like Alkoholik says it's the only viable solution if you don't want to rerun those "removal tools" every few days.
Get Linux.
Use Windows for games only.
