OK so where the hell were you when we were making the list?PiP wrote:this list is some fucking joke. So you have the oh-so-great E. Norton, but you leave out guys like for example
Jack Nicholson
Humphrey Bogart
Marlon Brando
Coen Brothers
Akira Kurosawa
David Lynch
Francis Ford Copolla
Federico Fellini
Tim Burton
hell, I'll even throw a Pollack to the lot: Roman Polanski (Chinatown, Rosemary's Baby, The Pianist, Repulsion, The Ninth Gate)
The God of Movies must be someone who knows the cinema inside out, has great influence on it and is versatile (so Scorsese is out, alas).
I'm torn between Kubrick and the Coens, with Scott and Coppola very close behind.
Spielberg is a greatly skilled movie-maker but he's way too mainstream oriented. Some great guys like Lynch are too much set in their own distinct styles to be god of movies in general. Actors don't have enough impact on how films are made.

I... I can't keep this from you any longer. My God what have we done?!?! Oh God.. if I had only known what kind of power could be spawned from this thread.... I have seen the thing... the.. God. It is a benevolent beast, and it shall rule movies in an awesome way... but I cannot help but imagine the horror that will follow from our ballot... Here!! I must be out with it.... He... They... It... God... help us...
The strength of a lion,
the vision of a madman.
Is this what was meant to be?
I conjured the thing without knowing...
My brothers...
Forgive me...

One of these does not belong with the others.

I mean I liked the Nightmare Before Christmas a lot but that's pretty much it for him. Kind of a one-shot-wonder. That and he's doing it with Johnny Depp.Tim Burton

Hard one.
Samuel L Jackon only had one great roll of his life, thats in Pulp Fiction. He's perfect for that movie, it was written for him. For every other movie he has made, he has done the exact same act as in Pulp Fiction over and over again and it's not working.
Clint - Im not a fan, didn't like million dollar baby or Ivo Jima much. Sure it's about the only movie out there that flips the camera to the japanese point of view during WW2 which is a bonus but.. I was looking forward to to it ending more than anything.
Martin Scorses
When thinking about it ,this guy has made 4 of my alltime favourite movies.
The Departed - Brilliant fucking flick.
Casino - Just saw it and it's just a classic
Goodfellas - If I could only pick 3 favourite movies, this would be one of them.
Raging Bull - Need I really say more?
Jackie Chan - lol
Spielberg - ET sucks, he raped Indiana Jones 4, he never quits on this stupid Jurrasic park series which died after the first part which was brilliant. Having said that I will definently go see Jurrasic Park 5 at the Cinema .Saving Private Ryan - a definent great movie. Most of his movies are good, but great? I'm kind of sick of him to be honest, mostly due to him raping the gaping asshole of Indiana Jones.
Stanley Kubrick - Full Metal Jacket is reason alone for him to be nominated, but Eyes Wide shut sucks.
And now im too tired to comment the rest so I'll just go with Martin Scorsese.
I could just say - Gibson - lol, Deniro - great actor but loves to be the maffia, in the maffia, or connected to the maffia. See Casino, Goodfellas, Analyze this, Analyze that - I'm sure he has more.
Mr Terminator - Yes, very hard to act like a Machine without feelings, allthough credit should be given for bulking up for the roll ... oh wait..
I like Ridley Scott too. American Gangster is one of the top movies on my greatest movie list but yea.. Stanley Curbric according to this list wins.

Dogmeats and PiP lists are like different genres. If you want to watch something like for fun and entertainment you will do dogmeats list but if you want a mental explosion of butt then you go with PiPs. Also why isn't James Cameron on the list? Pre-Titanic he was the best action director around.

Burton's artistic vision and style are quite exceptional in the (commercial) cinema world. You've just named Nightmare Before Christmas, Burton also gave us this:Edward_R_Murrow wrote:One of these does not belong with the others.I mean I liked the Nightmare Before Christmas a lot but that's pretty much it for him. and this:
and this:
Although you may not like the genre, Corpse Bride is masterfully made, I especially like this skeleton song.
Big Fish is remarkable storytelling and Ed Wood is also not to be overlooked.
All in all, despite Burton does not make films of the calibre of Kurosawa or Lynch, he's a wonderful phenomenon in the film world.
I can be only sad that his take on Plante of the Apes didn't turn out quite as good as I'd hoped.
scorsese gets my vote. he also made mean streets, which everyone seems to have forgotten about and yet it's the best gangster movie i've seen (no hyperbole), it's really angry and totally captures the filth of 70s new york (as i imagine it).
however i feel like coppola is probably my favourite director - godfathers 1 and 2 are unfuckwithable, apocalypse now is epic in a mostly good way, & the conversation is one of the best films about surveillance & paranoia that i've seen. he also owns a pretty good restaurant which surely counts for something. all his other films are naff though.
other mentionables --
terry gilliam: i think he might beat tim burton in terms of weird yet fairly well known directors. his movies have a great somewhat messy visual thing going on and he has a great sense of humour. best: brazil, 12 monkeys, fisher king, fear & loathing, holy grail.
alfred hitchcock: has made a lot of mediocre stuff but there are some masterpieces ie. north by northwest, rear window, vertigo, notorious. all quite entertaining too.
jean-pierre melville: have only seen a couple films by this guy, le samourai and le cercle rouge, both left a big impression on me though. very stylish and stripped back.
louis malle: DEEP son. my dinner with andre is a favourite, there are some other good ones too but i can't remember the names (they're french).
stanley kubrick: i feel he's somewhat overrated, his movies seem to me like they're trying too hard to be cerebral or something, but at least 5 or 6 are pretty amazing. (you know which ones)
woody allen: probably an unpopular choice but his early comedies are amazing (sleeper, bananas, everything you wanted to know about sex) and manhattan & annie hall are also of course good. i also like him because he's directed so fucking much and all his movies are at least watchable.
lynch: obvs. slowly falling off though.
actor wise, clearly de niro wins. aside: why are all leading male actors these days such bland, inoffensive pretty boys nohomo?

Agreed about Coppola's conversation, T. Gilliam and W. Allen
btw I've just finished watching Burton's Sweeney Todd and it's quite exhilarating, if you can put up with all the singing

Mad Max series
Lethal Weapon series
Braveheart
The Patriot (unfairly written off as Braveheart clone imho)
Chicken Run... lol
Apocalypto
I read that far. Mel Gibson started amazing and has since gone insane, making a chain of shit movies. Everything after about the Patriot sucked. Apocalypto was shit, don't lie to yourself.
