recommend a good TV series
After Northern Exposure, X-files and MASH I stopped watching tv series. These three were lots of fun back in the day but I had less and less time. Now, for some reason, I'm thinking about watching some series.
Recommend something please? As little cliché and slapstick as possible pls.
Preferable comedy(ish) but can be drama.
I was thinking Frasier, Twin Peaks?
Firefly and Jericho seem fishy, Lost and Heroes even more so.
Cheers,
Thorgrim

There is a mysterious sick patient, house suggests a treatment, noone agrees with him but they do it anyway he is wrong 2-3 times then they guess it and its either a tumor or a blood cloth.Thor Kaufman wrote:PiP wrote:I was thinking Frasier

I just saved you watching 5 seasons.
I am watching it though, Lisa cuddy is hot.
Do these glasses and my two chins make me look sexy?
most tv series seem like a giant meh to me. these are the only good ones ever:
first season of twin peaks (amazing)
the sopranos
the wire
curb your enthusiasm / seinfeld - if you like jewish humour these will rule; if you don't you will probably just find them really grating.
the office - uk version, not the gay us version.
monk - i've only seen like one episode of this, it seems weird & funny enough though, and the guy reminds me a bit of megatron.
let's paint tv
michael palin (of monty python) travel documentaries: round the world in 80 days, pole to pole etc. not funny but eminently watchable & interesting.

Gonna have to agree with Dexter and The Wire. The Wire because it kind of transcends television and serves equally as entertainment and cultural document. It also has some uniquely hilarious moments and a great sense of wit. Dexter is much more overtly funny and a brilliant riff on conformity. I'd also like to add the violently underrated Studio 60. It was advertised as sentimental shit by pen pushers but is very much worth checking out. Ballsy, ballsy show to air on NBC. In fact, those balls earned it a swift cancellation.
my vocabulary skills is above you.

Dexter is pretty great.
Firefly delivers some very nice scenes, it's not at all slapstick. There are some quirks to it, like revolvers that apparently are energy weapons...
I'm going to say Californication too, because it has some absurd sex scenes/situations that are pretty hilarious.
Unfortunately there's just too much sex in it, it kinda becomes a cheap joke halfway through.
Entertaining though, not a comedy, more like drama.
I saw one where everything froze over overnight. They had to continually knock off the ice with sledgehammers, while pulling in fishing cages for 2 days straight.
"Man drama" as a good friend of mine calls it
There was some paranormal show not long ago... "Supernatural" I think. Didn't get to watch so much of it, but I liked the few episodes I saw.
I'm hearing a lot of praise for the new terminator series.

Deadliest Catch?I also saw this documentary a while ago about crab fishing in the bering sea. Pretty intense.

Yeah, that's it. It's definitely better than most Discovery Channel crap.Smiley wrote:Deadliest Catch?

About Californication: The first season is a bit pussified because they are still feeling around to see what they can get away with. Every major "oh shit" moment is contrasted with an equally pussywhipped sentiment. If you can hang in there until season 2, DO. It's all uphill from there.
Also, since you wanted to see good comedy, I have to recommend It's Always Sunny In Phildelphia. You can currently get the first three seasons cheap and it is easily the best comedy show on television. Very experiment and groundbreaking stuff...with Danny Devito!

Twin Peaks.
It still blows my mind that a major network actually went for this instead of the usual safe, inoffensive drivel.
It's a prime time TV drama from David Lynch dammit. And I always got the feeling that he completely disdains that medium so he basically pissed all over it. In doing so, he blows that tired paradigm out of the water.
The movie is one of his most overlooked too.
