Syndicate Wars

Post by Lunchmeat »

Who here has played this game? It's pretty old, from 1996 i think and it runs on DOS but it's pretty cool. You are part of an evil corporation that has taken over the world in the future and controls everyone's mind to think they live in a paradise but really it is a dark, cyberpunkish dystopia. From your hoverblimp far above the city you direct your four man cyborg death squad in assassinations, brainwashing, bank robbing, and corporate espionage. And there is a religious doomsday cult. Pretty fun.

Gameplay is real-time mouse based "strategy" but really its just grouping all your guys and unloading on your targets with miniguns. Gameplay is kinda weird since it's so old and it takes a bit to get used to the controls but once you learn them it's pretty solid. It gets hard quick and I find myself repeating missions a lot. Nice way to waste a couple hours.

I have many fond memories of this game and its predecessor. No game has quite recaptured the hilarity of subjugating hapless civilians into a teeming throng of mindless homicidal fanatical bullet sponges.

Varied, often brutally challenging scenarios, reasonable A.I backed by robust asset employment, pleasantly coherent plot, a superb array of wonderful toys to steal, research and abuse . . .

I've heard that someone* might be considering reviving the franchise. Were I less cynical, I would be torn. Instead, I hope rumour remains rumour, and the memories of burning, screaming pixels remain unsullied. :drunk:

*Possibly THEM.

American revolt, the exp pack for the first game, was awesome.

Minigun. Uzi. Persuadatron.

Fucking amazing game...btw: dosbox + hamachi = multiplayer on xp if you're interested...

Agreed on a thought of a new game...it would be shit. An exact remake of the older games, though, with upgraded graphics/easier controls would be fucking amazing, at least in my opinion...though...it would have to stay 2d..doubtful and again...probably best it won't happen.

air strikes and those camoflague shields were awesome, and that American Express mission got made even more crazily hard then it already was.

I had it for the Jaguar - didn't play it for PC until a few years ago - classic, a touch up for controls/graphics would be nice, but no sequel...especially from "them".

I had the original on Amiga, and only played the sequal on Playstation. I think I once tried to download Syndicate Wars, but I couldn't get it to run properly so fucked it off.

apparently there was a sequel in the makes for PS2...looked at the concept art that was posted and the artist was some anime OH SHIT I HEAR THE ICE CREAM TRUCK!!!!!111!1111oneone...not that it matters since concept art rarely has anything to do with the game but...it looks like it is inevitable it someday will be remade...yet another franchise to ruin. awesome.

Old bullfrog titles though fucking rule. RIP :salute:

Awesome game, but at the time when I played it I was really young and didn't really speak much English, so the info in the first post came very much as a revalation.

I used to love Syndicate Wars. It was one of my absolute favorite games from the late 90's.

Syndicate was always held in high regards with the people who have played it but the game seems a bit too old for me to give it a shot. I don't know, I'll have to think about it. Thanks for the info lunchmeat.

Started playing Syndicate Wars again. I forgot how utterly fucking hard some of these early missions were (ie: if you didn't budget in an indoctrinator you're kinda fucked)
