It always looks like shit at first, especially when you're used to shaving. After a certain point you'll look less homeless, more Rob Pattinson/Johnny Depp/stubbly-celebrity-of-choice. But keep it trimmed. Buy an electric trimmer with an adjustable head so you can choose how much comes off. Even the cheaper ones do an acceptable job, and it'll look a lot neater than if you just let it grow freely. Some people look good when they shape their beards into goatees or other fancy forms, but I confess I prefer a less clearly maintained look. It's up to you.
And yes, be prepared to face comments (either positive or negative) both pre-shave and post, if you decide to get rid of the beard. I got lots of positive feedback when I grew mine, but I got sick of it after a few months and shaved. The reaction was not good. People were crushed. I don't want that kind of thoughtless cruelty weighing on my conscience, so I grew it back. Remember that it's not always about you, it's about the people who have to look at you day in and day out.

ive decided ill shave when i quit smoking, that is a good payback i think. its getting a little more gruff now anyway, started to pick up burnt matches and dead bees. since smiley and subhumans in depth advice i am not sure if a beard is worth having, but i could get it to acceptable length to shave whole head in one go instead of bothering to shave every day
yeah man fuck shaving LOL
