PAX 2009

Post by spokomptonjdub »

So I went to the annual Penny-Arcade expo this year, volunteered as an enforcer in fact, if only to gain maximum access to panelists, bypass lines, and hawk my own upcoming product.

The whole event was pretty kickass, although there were about 75,000 too many people. Gordie from Stand by Me was there, and a few other gaming industry "celebs" like Adam Sessler, Morgan Webb, Tim Schaefer, and Ron Gilbert.

I got to play Diablo 3 for a bit, and it was kosher. I also played Left 4 Dead 2, and it's really no different from 1 except now you can fight with swords and axes that are no use on any of the special zombies. The new zombies are pretty cool, but they don't radically change any of the gameplay.

Scribblenauts looked cool, Dragon Age had a top-secret booth that you had to wait in-line for 6 hours to get into, and Bioshock 2 had a booth with no actual game and just some contest that involved amateur detective work. Cave Story and Muramasa: Demon Blade for the Wii looked fun, and Bethesda had a booth for a game called Brink that looked like a fallout 3 mod and they had a playable demo of Doom 2.

There were lots of cosplay nerds and regular nerds, but the cosplay ones bothered me the most. Speaking of, does anyone know what these fucks are dressed up as?

I saw about 50 iterations of this group, and I feel like I'm missing something.

I'm taking a wild guess and assuming they're dressed up in regards to either the Penny Arcade game or comic strip...

I've worked as a producer for a small casual games company for a while now... And it sucks and is run by a complete dick. Basically, me and a few other chaps have banded together and are creating a Shmup-sidescroller for XBLA; we're entering an indie games challenge in October.

I don't think so... I've followed Penny Arcade since near the beginning, and these cosplayers look way too... japanese. Surprisingly there wasn't very many people dressed up as Penny Arcade characters, I saw a fruitfucker and a couple people dressed as the lookouts, but most the other costumes were videogames/anime.

Selfishly I did not announce my travel itinerary to DAC... apologies. PAX is MUCH improved; larger, more presenters, more streamlined, etc.

Interesting...i remember a few years ago it was pretty much just a few panels, went to see mc chris, and was horribly dissapointed pretty much by the rest minus the music.

If you like the previous Diablo games then number 3 will be a must-buy. It feels instantly familiar, but enough little tweaks and the obvious graphical upgrade make it feel fresh.

I only got to spend 15 minutes on it, which isn't really enough time to get a solid feel, but I enjoyed what I played. Being able to have multiple skills at your disposal is a huge plus. Blizzard still manages to impress; the game probably won't be out for another year at least, yet what I played felt finished and meticulously polished for an early build.
