Australia goes "Beyond Thunderdome"

In case you haven't seen this on the news yet, southern Australia has been besieged by dust storms in the past few days. The haze resulting from all the particles in the air gives Sydney the very odd appearance of having popped out of the ending sequence of Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome.

Sydney is on the East Coast of Australia, with Brisbane also getting some of the dust storms (which is more north easterly).

being on the east coast does not preclude Sydney from southern Australia as you'll see from this map-

Brisbane is most def in southern half of country as well.

The dust storms hit Sydney and Brisbane, yet passed us by in Melbourne (because the former places are shit). Brisbane is not southern Australia.

Typically when you talk about Australia, any south Australian geographical references are usually taken to mean Adelaide, or at the very most Melbourne, but even then that's south east.

Our states/territories as you can see from the map are also fairly geographically named. Western Australia covers the west, Norther Territory covers the north while South Australia covers the south. Maybe they ran out of explorer names after Tasmania? I don't know.
