This is old territory, but never understood the reasoning behind preorders. I mean its obvious why they exist from the corporate side of things, but unless we're talking about a GTA game, there is no reason why folks cant just go in the day the game comes out and buy it.
WHen I was a younger lad I fell into the gamestop trap where they ask you if you wanna preorder some shit, and I was like "yeah, sure". So I would preorder something or whatever, but I always ended up cancelling it. Its sorta boneheaded, though, to plan to buy a game before you even know how good its going to be. I think a great man once said "Never underestimate the boneheadedness of the people".

Well hey now, there's nothing wrong with preordering especially when you know that the game will sell like hotcakes on opening day, like Left 4 Dead. Its all about making the consumer feel secure in their purchase more than anything, because they know they'll have a reserved copy for by the time they get there and its sold out.

I only own a pc, actually, so purchasing games can run both ways for me. The last console I got was a Gamecube, and the only game I have for that is Super Smash Brothers: Melee. However, I still prefer owning the game itself, for I guess out of a need for personal verification that I do in fact own it, more or less.

I would feel safe not to preorder big games like GTA because you know that they are going to get a ton of them in and any store that doesn't have enough would be stupid. The only titles I think that you would want to preorder are the more rare ones in which they only get a few copies of it in. This is all obsolete information though since ordering from the internet became big.
I order all my games online since I'm too lazy to go to the game store and when I do they always try to push shit on me or they do some other bull shit. I remember I bought the last copy of like Mario Kart for Gamecube and it was the display copy case that was opened and the game itself was in the drawer but they would only sell it to me as new.
I still have memories of their buy used games too during the n64 era and I kept all my shit in almost new condition with box and all the packings but I would get the same price as any kid who came in with one that was sitting on the street. They were buying most of them for dollars a piece and probably selling them back as new.

Here's a bitch about Dragon Age Origins, Bioware's latest creation.
*IF* you preorder, you will have free DLC on day one - another character, some cool armor which is usable in Mass Effect 2, and ... something else I dont' remember and I don't care.
Otherwise, you're looking at dropping about 22 bucks for the DLC if you don't preorder.
Okay, granted - most likely DA:O will be good. I liked ME, KOTOR, etc - Bioware has some good shit. But I won't preorder it. I always get screwed on games I preorder.
Fable 2? It was okay I guess. Not what it was hyped to be, though. Fallout 3? LOL. Ghostbusters? Awesome! 2-player co-op!!! Oh wait, what - no campaign co-op? But I thought...but it's easy to....*cry*.
I won't preorder anymore because honestly, I don't want to waste any more of my hard-earned cash on a game that may very well be a big letdown. Is DA:O a medieval Mass Effect? I dunno - but if it is, I'll pass, thanks. *AND* I won't be disappointed in not being able to return it under Gamestop's 7 - day return policy.

p.s. - yay Macky!
p.p.s. - In case I didn't make clear what I'm talking about:

Fuck paying for DLC that is ready day 1 of the game. You should've put that shit in there. Screw you, developers...screw you.Macky wrote: And why the hell would i pre-order at Game Stop to unlock 8 extra weapon combinations when there are reported to be millions in the game already? Afew reasons to preorder and yes, this is speaking from my experience at Gamestop.
1. It garuntees a game. I realize most people here operate on PC and thus can get all 4 exciting releases a year for PC digitally, but for a console there are some things that can be almost impossible to find if you don't preorder. Modern Warfare 2 is one that is gonna come to mind pretty quick as everyone and their mother is gonna try to get the game and it's probably gonna be harder to find in the first week or two. Absolutely impossible? Probably not, but I prefer just doing things easily.
2. It ensures they're going to stock games. I buy a lot of rarer games. A lot of times in games, they will not always stock rarer games unless someone preorders it. Hence, a preorder ensures that they're gonna have ATLEAST my copy. Case in point with a game that wasn't even that rare. My (Former) store only was shipped 3 copies of Call of Juarez. Those 3 copies sold almost immediately. More people wanted it. If those (or really ANY people) people had reserved, they would have gotten their copy.
3. You're not really losing anything since the price comes off. Infact, generally you're given abunch of goodies and merchandise. I like game swag. They give away game swag. Hell, if you're on good enough terms with staff, they'll sometimes give it to you because you're awesome. But regardless, sometimes it's nice to get something kinda cool extra for just putting money down on a game that you're going to get anyways.
4. Preordering can be a great way to get a game (legally) if you have low income. Just put 5 dollars down a week on it and you'll probably have it paid off by the time it comes out.
5. It helps the store. This is something I get the feeling no one will care about, but Gamestop Corporate pressures their stores to get reserves. You give them reserves and the store ranks higher which means they're more likely to get more copies of games, more swag, and generally more of everything such as rarer used games. It also keeps the store open and keeps employees you like (if any) employeed. The best way to keep the good folks who know what they fuck they're talking about video games? Give them a reserve. Know nothings? When they're at the register, cancel that reserve. If it is within a day, your numbers will count for 0 for the store (neither negative nor positive) but the individual you like gets a +1 and the one you hate gets a -1 for reserves. This will eventually add up and give the good worker more hours and the bad worker less.
6. As previousily mentioned. If you know you're going to buy it, why not? There's no reason NOT to, really.

Normally I wouldn't, but I think it's kinda important to emphasize that stores aren't the ones who make those aggressive policies towards reservations and subs. They kinda get it passed down to them by the corporate and it's either "my way or the highway" in terms of both employement and keeping the store open.

Last I was there, the DM had to destroy any defective product that was unrepairable in person. It's generally fucking stupid because they get rid of like 100 strategy guides a year. If you can't find a strategy guide for a game (and with the internet, why would you? Still, they can sometimes be nice collectors items so for certain games I'd look out for em) it's not because they sold out generally, it's because Gamestop randomly decided to burn em.
