OXM Podcast: "New Vegas developer not dictated by fans"

Post by King of Creation »

<strong>[ Game -> Interview ]</strong> - More info on <a href="http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Pete Hines">Person: Pete Hines</a> | More info on <a href="http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Obsidian Entertainment">Company: Obsidian Entertainment</a> | More info on <a href="http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout: New Vegas">Game: Fallout: New Vegas</a>

<p>OXM has released a podcast interview with Pete Hines as a supplement to their <em><strong>Fallout: New Vegas</strong></em> article. While the article itself was pretty pro-Bethesda and Fallout 3, it never took a negative tone. This podcast, however, apparently focuses on the negative - in that Bethesda <a href="http://www.oxm.co.uk/article.php?id=17404">cares nothing about what we think</a>:</p>
<blockquote>
<p><em><span>In OXM's new podcast, Bethesda's Pete Hines explains that the fans that railed against Fallout 3's release had no effect on the decision to hire the Fallout veterans at Obsidian.

Hardcore Fallout fans are notoriously protective of their favourite series, and many of them made it very clear that they were dissatisfied with Bethesda's critically acclaimed and enormously popular take on the universe.

In spite of this, Bethesda VP of Marketing, Pete Hines was quick to deny that pleasing these furious fans was anything to do with Obsidian's hiring, even though key members of the development team worked on previous Fallout titles and a cancelled version of Fallout 3, codenamed Van Buren.</span></em></p>
<p><em><span>"We don't do major development deals and projects to appease any one fanbase," Pete Hines explained. "That's a really good way to go out of business fast."

Still, Hines recognises that Obsidian is a great fit for the project.

"I don't think I've talked to anybody about this, whether it's people at other publishers, developers, journalists, whatever, who haven't said it makes sense."

<p><span>So our opinions are crap, but if the same opinions come from someone else then it's a good idea?

So I suppose any company that caters to a specific gaming niche and still gets by isn't a good one then?

Yeah, very nasty. He could have at least lied. Instead he was all like "nah, fuck those guys, their opinions don't make me no money!"

this muthafucka won't even give us credit for agreeing that this is a good idea!! That bastard.

You know they picked Obsidian to please us. You just know it. They were like "If we market it as a bethesda game the FO3 fans will be totally into it, while at the same time the nerdy oldschool fanboys will know whos making it and be all into it. Also the game will be a better game than FO3 just because Obsidian es mas talented. So it's a win win win"

I still see the hidden truth that they suck so bad they have to outsource to make a game that doesn't suck. Truths avoided, universe continues its slantwize spinning. Disaster averted.
I miss the good ol' USSA.
