General Electric GAU-8/A Avenger: 3ØMM, seven-barreled, electrically-driven rotary cannon. Most famous for it’s selection as the primary weap on the USAF’s A-1Ø Thunderbolt II. Designed for anti-tank operations, the GAU-8A has a muzzle velocity of 3,5ØØ feet per second and a maximum range of 4,ØØØ feet.
The Avenger is one of the largest autocannons ever mounted on an aircraft, and is the largest currently mounted. (The Germans experimented with a version of the 88, but it never went into full production.)

The Avenger is, unfortunately, EXACTLY what you can’t use in any serious application; It’s too heavy and difficult to mount on a fixed-position. It is ironically ONLY useful on the craft it was designed for, the A-1Ø.

I'd say A-10's are a serious application.

Basically what happened is when the GAU-8 was invented the guys looked at it for a while and one eventually said "Y'know, I bet we could build an airplane around this and make it even cooler."

And they did.

Always loved the A-10. Never hear the gun till after the shells have hit. It's beautiful.

I'm with you on this one. Warthogs were Gulf War sky demons that raped ground forces with a vengeance; had a flight sim of the A-10 when I was young, fell in love with the pure devastation you could cause in one.

"Rudel's input was used during the development of the A-10 ground attack aircraft."

Read his biography. Very interesting.

The A-10 is a tank with wings on it. During the first Gulf War an entire wing was taken off of one during an attack and it made it back to the base and was repaired. I don't have a source readily available for that but I did see it on the History Channel when they had an hour long devoted show to it.

I've heard the same story from airmen I know, so it's either true or a very popular rumor.

Wow I guess oldschool AA still works. It just can't hurt a beast like A-10 anyway.

Rumor? I'm no scientist, but isn't the purpose of paired wings to maintain even lift across the width of the machine? I've heard of a Warthog returning home sans engine in Desert Storm, but there has to be an issue with flying wingless. I'll leave it to a more aeronautically astute individual to further clarify, I just don't think physics would allow for it. There's that whole interaction of lift and thrust and whatnot that I think would go to shit rather quickly with a whole wing MIA.
off topic? OMG YOU'VE BEEN CENSORED... yet you're still posting. MYSTARY!!!!

A-10's are designed to be able to fly with part of a wing missing due to triple redundancy designed in it's hydrolic systems. I doubt it was the whole wing that was shot off, but I fully believe what was said, although I suppose it's possible they were talking about "in theory" instead of actuality. It's been awhile since the conversations. The aircraft is designed, though, to fly with one engine, one tail, one elevator and half a wing torn off and still make it home to momma's for biscuits and gravy, so I still insist that it's very possible.
