There are some peculiarities of Lem's work that make it a hard reading in some respects. His language is quite important. The Polish language he uses is a marvel. Also, he continuously plays with words, especially when inventing countless new words. Each of those bears various hints about their meaning. On top of that, some words and situations have further meaning in the context of Polish culture. Being a linguist I can tell you that this makes it extremely hard, if not impossible, to translate or to understand once translated.

Thanks, brah. I don't doubt what you say, the english translation of Solaris is from a French translation, so I'm sure a lot of nuance got lost along the way. (I rewatched the Tarkovsky flick and that subtitled translation from Russian to English varied too, to fuck things up worse). That in itself is a pretty good indicator of how rare his books are in english.
Sucks too, because can never find him at libraries or used stores. I'm not a big fan of buying new books retail.


Trying to read Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash, always heard this one mentioned in the same breath as Neuromancer, but it's way too cute, and *wink wink nudge nudge* for me. I much prefer Gibson's strung-out, hard boiled, noir-y low-life goodness.

A bit OT but just curious. I wouldn't really consider them in the same shelf like the Simpsons or South Park.

I wanted to mention Beawis and Butthead but most folk think they are shit. I quite enjoy them though.

I've recently read Saburō Sakai - Samurai! (exclamation mark is in the book's title...).
Really good autobiography about Japanese WWII pilot ace. If you can find a copy, I definately suggest reading it.

Nope, it is "Why was this stupid war started in the first place?".

It's quite an educational book, and Japanese didn't have flying matchboxes, at least not when the war wast started.
Infact, at the beginning of the China-Japan conflict, Japanese air force was in advantage with their Mitshubishi Zeros, during which, some American aircraft models were used - and most of them were wiped clean. Zeros were pretty badass, not to mention them later being used in (desperate) kamikaze attacks.

What was the imperial reasoning for the invasion before the US embargo?
At least the pilots feelings about the war and how he related to it when it started.
