Thin layers of paint (drybrush!) and (STRONG!) varnish here and there.
Sandpaper where the paint wouldn't be visible anyway (i.e. parts of the trigger).
Grease.

Actually, how did you go about painting the nerf gun? I don't really know how to paint the metal effect, but I had previously been working on a Doctor Doom mask that would benefit from that information.

It's important to use decent paint, to start with.

Never go for standard spray paint. It'll fuck shit up.

Go with black Citadel spray paint as a base coat. It's nicely matte, strong but still thin - leaves the details visible. Even scratches - which can be a bit annoying at times, but a second layer usually takes care of that.



Then, use Boltgun metal and apply it on the bits you want metallic.
Drybrush where you want shading. (i.e. like on the cylinder). Let it dry properly.



Now highlight the edges with Mithril silver. Again, let it dry properly.




Then, to achieve a dirty, weathered effect, put some brown mixed with some green added into the inward bent corners, to give it a grimey shade. (i.e. the part that would be near the thumb when you grab it).
Finally, give it some washes of Citadel ink (chestnut ink) or diluted browns/greens/whatever dirty color you want. Make it mostly water, with just a bit of paint in it. It'll leave a filthy coating on the metallic paint which will make it look more realistic.



Inks will give it more of a shiny and see-through effect, so they'll make the silvery metal look like brass or something.
Diluted paints will add a dirt layer.

Adjust inking/washing as well as actual choice of colors to your needs.
If you don't want an aged look, don't apply dirt.
If you want a golden armor for example, start with a brass and work up to gold.


Mistakes happen, so be prepared to quickly wipe stuff off!
You WILL have to make corrections, so plan ahead in which order you'll paint, to avoid "backtracking".
Paint precisely where you have to. But leave things up to luck when it makes sense - i.e. let the wash run over shit liberally. When a gun gets dirty IRL, you don't give a fuck about where it runs.

Things like real dry blood add to the realism. (when tinkering with stuff, cuts and shit happen - use them to your advantage!)

Bonus:

The wooden handle I achieved by paintig it brown and then gently stroking it with a coarse brush dipped in bleached bone, to give it a tiny lines that give it the wood effect.
After that a few washes of chestnut ink. Voila.

Another tip:

Take everything you want to paint apart. As apart as possible!
Covering shit with tape etc. just isn't the right way to go.
Sometimes you can't get around it, but in most cases you can. Just don't be a pussy and take it apart. Even the small bits. ESPECIALLY THE SMALL BITS!
I know it's scary. But there comes the tape:
Cover internal areas you don't want painted with tape, so buttons can still move around along the casing and shit like that.

And REMEMBER HOW TO REASSEMBLE IT!!!
Draw a damn diagram or something. Poke screws through a sheet of paper, roughly in the shape of the object you've taken apart. Helps to memorize what goes where.

Don't waste the money on GW primer. .98 cent Colorplace spraypaint from Wal-Mart does just as well - been using it for years on my 40k models.
