Enter the Void review

Post by Megatron »

I watched this yesterday, it was interesting? I'm not sure if I liked it or not, but, it was sort of worth watching.

It's about a drug dealer in japan who dies and flies around tokyo watching people bang or whatever. Directed by gasper noe, same guy who did irreversible? this movies nowhere near as harsh, but it is a little tricky as its 2 hours and 30 minutes long maybe, although it could do with losing an hour.

its a little like a mix of eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, tron, 2001 and softcore porn if you watched them all at the same time whilst a bit stoned. Though that isn't really what its like either. If you get the chance and have the patience, give it a shot.

I've never seen Irreversible, is that a movie that is worth a watch? Also that pic you posted looks pretty awesome.

irreversible is definately worth seeing. It isn't really an easy watch, but it's pretty good perhaps. It's in french (DAMN) and is about the nature of revenge I guess. It has monica belluci or whatever shes called in it and the movie is filmed in about 8 takes that take place chronologically in reverse?

you are close enough manoil, lol. here is the credits for enter the void. though the movie isnt as fast paced as these, they are pretty rockin

I'm looking forward to checking this out. I got to say, I lived in Tokyo for many years and when it comes to hard drugs, they practically do not exist in Japan. 'Shrooms however were sold legally on the street and hash was fairly plentiful. Even then this all seemed to be in the ex-pat community, the Japanese themselves take a more hysterical, uninformed "reefer madness" type approach to drugs. Their laws are pretty draconian, not death/life-sentence bad like Singapore/Thailand/Malaysia.

Nice heads up.
Now where to find it...

Goddamn, good thing I'm not epileptic or these opening credits would have given me a seizure. They are giving me a headache though. It's like a bad acid trip, I just want them to end, and when I finally think I'm in the clear it keeps going.

Two things - doors are really short in Japan, and the decision to make this guy blink the whole fucking time is annoying, considering you don't notice when you blink, so you shouldn't notice when this asshole does.

It is overly long and somewhat repetitive towards the end. Should've been trimmed down.

That being said, there are some really sick and trippy shots and effects in that movie. Great stuff. I had to stop the movie and rip a couple extra bong hits once I'd started it. I don't think I'd bother watching or staying awake if I saw it sober either.

It helps to have Paz dela Heurta nekkid for most of the movie.

I'd throw The Wall and a dash of Jodorowsky in there as well and you've got Enter the Void.

My problem is that excessive flashing light lulls me to sleep, and I didn't know that's what the movie was about, so I made the mistake of beginning to watch it around 11 PM.

It's also very fugue-ish, so even if you were wide awake you'd be asking yourself, "wait, did I miss something, is this shit all out of sequence?". Which, if you're into the movie, is kind of intriguing.

But if'n yer not, it's just kind of a meandering sloppy mess of whiny, basket-case losers, a la Eternal Shininess of the Unspotted Mind thingy.

Enter the Void straddles that line pretty closely. The themes and visuals are pretty heavy, the subjects are irredeemable wastes.

I found it more watchable than Irreversible.

If you made the mistake of watching Irreversible in theaters, you were treated to a dose of infrasound while the chick was being raped to make you feel even worse about it.

In Enter the Void, the director seems to be trying to make everything gritty and sleazy and shocking to a level that's real then surpasses real. The effect becomes, instead of being shocked at the shocking things before you, they come off as schticky and overdone. At least that was my experience.

Which reminds me of a single, intra-vaginal shot (in two senses of the word) in Enter the Void.

Infrasound is sound operating in the 17-19 mhz range or somewhere around there. It's interesting, because that's the same range the human eye vibrates at, and you can't hear it. You should look it up.

Organ pipes in churches often produce infrasound, which is what gives you the feeling of other worldly presence when they're blasting. It's also been proven some "haunting" sites are simply affected by infrasound, which causes feelings of uneasiness and not being alone. It can also make you think you see things out of the corner of your eye.

It can also cause aneurysms. Oddly, all those who have attempted research of this aspect of infrasound have died due to aneurysms. :drunk:

It's like the time I shat my pants while researching the brown noise.

I never did find it.

infrasound is sound below 20Hz, human hearing is usually somewhere in the 20Hz-20kHz range, hope this helps
